Job DescriptionJob Overview:
APTIM is seeking a Junior Safety and Industrial Hygiene Specialist to support health and safety programs within a multidisciplinary R&D laboratory environment. Working under the guidance of Senior EH&S and technical specialists, this position will provide hands-on support for laboratory chemical safety, industrial hygiene, lasers and non-ionizing radiation, lithium-ion batteries, and biosafety program activities. The ideal candidate is an early-career professional with prior laboratory safety experience, who enjoys working directly with researchers and engineers to evaluate hazards, implement practical controls, and promote a strong laboratory safety culture.
Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
- Conduct routine laboratory inspections and assist with identifying, documenting, and correcting unsafe conditions and work practices.
- Support technical IH work such as exposure assessments, air monitoring, risk assessments, hazard evaluations, control recommendations, and regulatory compliance support.
- Support implementation and maintenance of laboratory safety procedures and hazard communication program.
- Evaluate workplace environments for potential chemical, physical, and biological hazards
- Assist with chemical inventories, Safety Data Sheets, labeling, storage compatibility, compressed-gas management, and hazardous-material quantity tracking.
- Maintain and update laboratory-specific standard operating procedures, job hazard analyses, inspection checklists, training materials, and emergency-response procedures.
- Deliver or coordinate employee training on laboratory safety, chemical handling, PPE, compressed gases, lasers, biological materials, lithium-ion batteries, and emergency procedures.
- Maintain accurate EHS records, including inspections, training, exposure assessments, equipment certifications, chemical inventories, and corrective-action documentation.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, occupational safety, environmental health, public health, chemistry, biology or closely related field.
- 1-3 years of relevant safety, industrial hygiene, laboratory, research experience.
- Foundational knowledge of occupational safety and health principles and laboratory chemical hazards.
- Experience with industrial hygiene sampling methods and monitoring equipment.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and work safely in laboratory, testing, and equipment areas.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong computer skills required. Must have proficiency in Microsoft applications such as MS Excel, MS Word, SharePoint Online, etc.
- Ability to work onsite in the greater Seattle area at least three days per week and respond to laboratory needs during scheduled onsite hours.
- Working car and willingness to travel locally between laboratory locations.
- Must have good driving record
Preferred Additional Credentials
- Familiarity with OSHA laboratory and hazard communication requirements.
