The City of Tumwater is offering a career advancement opportunity for Maintenance Technician I employees who are ready to progress to the Maintenance Technician II level within the Utility Maintenance series. This recruitment is intended to support employee growth and recognize the development of skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to perform at the next level. Maintenance Technician II employees perform skilled maintenance, repair, and operational work within their assigned crew area, with increased independence and responsibility.
This includes applying technical knowledge in the field, supporting the safe and efficient completion of work assignments, and contributing to the overall reliability and performance of City infrastructure systems. This opportunity is open to employees from all maintenance crews, including but not limited to Streets, Sanitary Sewer, Stormwater, and Water. Selected candidates will demonstrate readiness to perform work with greater autonomy, apply established procedures and standards, and contribute to team operations through strong work practices, communication, and collaboration.
Job Duties Sanitary Sewer Crew
- Perform skilled maintenance, repair, and inspection of sanitary sewer systems, including mains, manholes, lift stations, and related infrastructure
- Operate specialized equipment (e.g., vactor trucks, CCTV inspection equipment) to support inspection and preventative maintenance
- Troubleshoot and resolve routine and moderately complex system issues to maintain reliable wastewater service
- Respond to emergency calls, including sewer backups and system failures
- Document work activities and support regulatory compliance
- Perform maintenance, repair, and inspection of stormwater systems, including catch basins, pipelines, and drainage structures
- Support water quality efforts through system cleaning and maintenance activities
- Identify and address drainage issues to reduce flooding risks
- Operate equipment to maintain system functionality and respond to storm events
- Document work activities and support environmental compliance
- Perform skilled maintenance and repair of water distribution systems, including mains, valves, hydrants, and service lines
- Support installation and replacement of water infrastructure
- Identify and assist in resolving leaks, pressure issues, and system deficiencies
- Respond to emergency water system issues, including main breaks
- Support water quality and safety standards through proper procedures and documentation
- Perform maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, rights-of-way, and traffic control infrastructure
- Operate equipment to support roadway maintenance, including asphalt repair and surface treatments
- Install and maintain traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings
- Respond to roadway hazards and emergency conditions
- Support safe and effective traffic control in work zones
- Perform work with increased independence using established procedures, standards, and safety practices
- Operate tools and equipment safely and effectively
- Support team operations through communication, coordination, and reliability
- Identify issues and contribute to problem‑solving and continuous improvement
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and system conditions
- Respond to after‑hours and emergency call‑outs as required
- Routinely works independently and completes assigned work without direct supervision
- Demonstrates a strong working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and utility systems relevant to assigned crew functions
- Proficient in the use of inspection, diagnostic, and repair tools and equipment
- Holds additional required or preferred credentials, including both general and crew‑specific certifications
