The Buildings & Grounds Division (B&G) is responsible for the Capitol Campus and Department of Enterprise Services (DES) managed building operations, stewardship, and historic preservation. B&G provides service to over 42 agencies, maintains, operates and preserves the 486-acre state Capitol Campus in Olympia, including more than 28 buildings, 18 public monuments, over 6,000 parking stalls, four state parks and a 260-acre lake.

B&G executes these responsibilities through the following service programs:
Facilities Operations, Grounds Operations, Leadership and Admin, Maintenance & Repairs, Support Services (Custodial).

About the Opportunity:

As a Maintenance Mechanic 1, you will play a vital role in the care and upkeep of the historic Capitol Campus grounds and other designated Thurston County locations in primary support of the Grounds Shop. In this hands-on position, you will maintain assigned grounds areas by safely operating a variety of hand and power tools, as well as large-scale truck mowers and specialized landscaping equipment.

Adherence to basic safety rules and practices, including wearing high-visibility safety vests, is essential as you work to keep our public spaces beautiful, safe, and well-maintained.

Some of What You'll Enjoy Doing Includes:

* Supports the Grounds Shop by maintaining and repairing Capitol Campus and park buildings, grounds, and signage.

* Performs minor carpentry, concrete, and fencing work, including the installation and repair of tables and benches.

* Assists skilled trades technicians with painting, plumbing, mechanical, and minor electrical projects.

* Operates grounds equipment and trailers to safely transport materials, supplies, and heavy machinery.

* Installs, maintains, repairs, and maps campus irrigation systems, including clocks, mainlines, and sprinklers.

* Maintains, mows, seeds, and fertilizes campus lawns, shrub beds, and annual flower displays, including diagnosing and treating plant diseases and pests.

* Performs landscape and hardscape installations while safely operating equipment ranging from weed eaters and chainsaws to tractors, street sweepers, and snowplows.

* Cleans, services, and makes minor repairs to all hand tools, power tools, and motorized vehicles used on the job.

* Other duties as needed.

Required Qualifications:

* High school graduate or GED

* Two (2) years of work experience in construction, building and equipment maintenance, or repair work.

* Ability to lift or move fifty (50) lbs.

* Valid driver's license.

* Agreement to obtain and maintain a Pesticide Operators License within six (6) months of employment from the Department of Agriculture.

* Agreement to obtain and maintain a Flagger certification within one (1) year of employment.

* Participation in the DES Respiratory Protection Program.

* Ability to read and write, and to understand and carry out instructions.
