Maintenance Technician – Thurston County Public Works
Salary: $5,012.00 - $6,210.00 monthly.
Essential Functions- Perform labor associated with maintenance, repair, and construction of roadway systems, including roadway/shoulder maintenance, construction, drainage, traffic control, mowing and vegetation control, bridge maintenance, snow/ice removal and control.
- Operate a variety of highway maintenance construction equipment such as tilt/ramp trailer, street sweeper, 10‑yd dump truck, 5‑to‑8‑ton roller, pup trailer, medium‑size wheel loader, snowplow, brush chipper/truck, crack sealer, sander truck.
- Control traffic by flagging to guide traffic through work sites.
- Lubricate and perform minor mechanical repairs on equipment.
- Assist in construction, maintenance, and repair of buildings, structures, and equipment.
- Install and maintain traffic control signs and road markings.
- Outside work exposed to varying weather conditions; exposure to fumes, paints, solvents, pesticides, noise, and other hazardous materials.
- Physical effort: heavy lifting often in excess of 50 lb and work in confined or cramped sites.
- Schedule:
regular full‑time work week, normally 40 hours within a seven‑day period, may include 8‑, 9‑, or 10‑hour days; other schedules may be established with notice. - Occasional travel for meetings or training.
- Daily customer interactions with County staff and the public.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Two years of road construction, maintenance, or equipment operating experience.
- Valid Washington State Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and tanker endorsements (no manual restriction). Tanker endorsement must be obtained within six months of hire.
- Valid First Aid Card (obtain within three months of hire if not yet held).
- Washington Traffic Flagging Card (obtain within six months of employment).
- Must complete the departmental equipment training program for Maintenance Technician during the probationary period.
- Proficient at operating road construction equipment.
- Ability to make minor mechanical repairs on road maintenance equipment.
- Capability to install traffic control signs.
- Represented by a union.
- Eligibility for overtime under FLSA.
