Maintenance Technician – Thurston County Public Works

Salary: $5,012.00 - $6,210.00 monthly.

Essential Functions
  • Perform labor associated with maintenance, repair, and construction of roadway systems, including roadway/shoulder maintenance, construction, drainage, traffic control, mowing and vegetation control, bridge maintenance, snow/ice removal and control.
  • Operate a variety of highway maintenance construction equipment such as tilt/ramp trailer, street sweeper, 10‑yd dump truck, 5‑to‑8‑ton roller, pup trailer, medium‑size wheel loader, snowplow, brush chipper/truck, crack sealer, sander truck.
  • Control traffic by flagging to guide traffic through work sites.
  • Lubricate and perform minor mechanical repairs on equipment.
  • Assist in construction, maintenance, and repair of buildings, structures, and equipment.
  • Install and maintain traffic control signs and road markings.
Working Conditions
  • Outside work exposed to varying weather conditions; exposure to fumes, paints, solvents, pesticides, noise, and other hazardous materials.
  • Physical effort: heavy lifting often in excess of 50 lb and work in confined or cramped sites.
  • Schedule:

    regular full‑time work week, normally 40 hours within a seven‑day period, may include 8‑, 9‑, or 10‑hour days; other schedules may be established with notice.
  • Occasional travel for meetings or training.
  • Daily customer interactions with County staff and the public.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of road construction, maintenance, or equipment operating experience.
  • Valid Washington State Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and tanker endorsements (no manual restriction). Tanker endorsement must be obtained within six months of hire.
  • Valid First Aid Card (obtain within three months of hire if not yet held).
  • Washington Traffic Flagging Card (obtain within six months of employment).
  • Must complete the departmental equipment training program for Maintenance Technician during the probationary period.
Desired Skills
  • Proficient at operating road construction equipment.
  • Ability to make minor mechanical repairs on road maintenance equipment.
  • Capability to install traffic control signs.
