Position: Accountant I

Nature of Work: This is entry‑level professional accounting work in the creation, analysis, and audit of financial records. Work involves the application of accounting principles to financial records, the establishment and maintenance of fiscal systems, and the installation of system charges. Work also includes serving as liaison between the Finance Department and other City departments as well as external parties, providing assistance in financial matters, and ensuring that budgetary policies are observed.

Employees in this classification may supervise a small group of employees. This classification involves working with relative independence, referring new or complex issues to a superior.

Education and Experience: The knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience. Bachelors degree in Accounting OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Qualifications:

Must be able to transport oneself or coordinate transportation to work sites throughout the City during the course of the work day.

Pay Range: $63,065.60 with step increases to $86,715.20 Annually

Benefits: Forty‑hour work week. Paid leave per year: twelve days vacation; five days management; fifteen days sick; and fifteen holidays. Examination Information: The multiple‑choice/written examination will be on Friday, February 13, 2026, at 9:00am at the Omaha/Douglas Civic Center, 1819 Farnam Street, 7th floor, room 702. An invitation via email to the exam will be given to candidates once their application has been received, reviewed by a recruiter, and accepted to the test for the position. The test is designed to assess knowledge of the job, skills, and abilities of this position.

The passing score on the examination is 60%. This will be weighted 100% in the final score.

Veteran Points: To claim five (5) points for veteran's preference, you must submit proof of service (such as a DD‑214) that includes the date of induction, date of honorable separation, and Social Security number. (You must have completed more than 180 consecutive days of active duty.) To receive an additional five (5) points credit for disability, you must submit proof of eligibility from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs dated within the last 12 months.

This information must be submitted to the Human Resources Department by February 13, 2026.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of modern office systems, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to operate, computers and other technology using standard or customized computer or systems software applications appropriate to the assigned tasks.
  • Skill in preparing accounting reports and statements.
  • Skill in analyzing and evaluating accounting and auditing issues and developing accurate and complete statements, reports, and recommendations.
