Position Summary

The Accounting Manager – Cattle Procurement & General Accounting is responsible for overseeing accounting activities related to cattle procurement while developing a broad understanding of Greater Omaha Packing's accounting operations. Initially, the role will focus primarily on cattle procurement accounting, treasury activities, and related reporting responsibilities, with the expectation of gradually assuming broader responsibilities across general accounting, financial reporting, tax compliance, internal controls, and management functions.

The Accounting Manager is responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, identifying and mitigating risks, implementing effective internal controls, overseeing banking and payment activities, managing tax and regulatory reporting, and driving continuous process improvements. As business needs evolve, the role will assume additional accounting responsibilities and play a critical role in strengthening the Company's financial processes and control environment.

Key Responsibilities

Cattle Procurement & General Accounting

  • Oversee accounting activities related to cattle procurement, including purchases, settlements, payments, accruals, and month-end close.
  • Ensure accurate and timely recording of financial transactions in accordance with accounting standards and Company policies.
  • Manage accounting and reporting responsibilities for assigned business units and corporate functions.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, financial analyses, and variance reporting.
  • Oversee treasury-related activities, including payment approvals, banking transactions, and exception monitoring.

Tax, Compliance, and Regulatory Reporting

  • Maintain compliance with applicable tax regulations and support audits, examinations, and compliance requests.
  • Manage documentation related to tax filings, exemption certificates, and reporting obligations.

Risk Management and Internal Controls

  • Identify financial, operational, and compliance risks and implement controls to mitigate those risks.
  • Ensure compliance with Company policies, accounting procedures, and internal control requirements.
  • Support internal and external audits, including documentation, testing, and remediation efforts.
  • Promote a strong control environment and continuous improvement culture.

Leadership and Process Improvement

  • Supervise, mentor, and develop team members while fostering accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Build a comprehensive understanding of Company accounting processes and assist with the transition of additional responsibilities over time.
  • Establish priorities, review work product, and ensure timely completion of departmental responsibilities.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives focused on efficiency, standardization, automation, and reporting enhancements.
  • Collaborate with Procurement, Operations and Human Resources to support business objectives.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support budgeting, forecasting, KPI reporting, and special projects.
  • Serve as a key resource for accounting systems, reporting tools, and departmental initiatives.
  • Gradually assume ownership of additional accounting functions and financial processes as assigned.
  • Cross-train in various accounting disciplines to support succession planning, business continuity, and departmental growth.
  • Perform other accounting, financial reporting, and administrative responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience.
  • Prior supervisory, team leadership, or people management experience required.
  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close processes.
  • Experience with accounts payable, inventory, procurement, or agricultural accounting preferred.
