Position Purpose

Provides professional learning and coaching to elementary teachers in best practices in literacy development to improve literacy instruction so that all students are reading on or above grade level. The focus is on building teachers’ understanding of literacy and its art and science through rapid coaching cycles, facilitating professional learning sessions, modeling best practices, coaching staff on observed lessons, and collaborating with teachers and instructional leaders to implement literacy strategies.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Provide professional learning and coaching on school literacy initiatives consistent with district goals and objectives.
  • Analyze teacher practices through classroom observations, data analysis, and student work to guide coaching and professional learning.
  • Provide direct coaching feedback to teachers based on observations and analysis of practice.
  • Track student and teacher progress to assist in coaching and provide data to drive professional learning.
  • Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small‑group instruction.
  • Develop intervention plans and instructional materials and translate these into learning experiences to best utilize available instructional time.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning, modify instructional methods to fit individual student needs, and provide individualized or small‑group instruction as needed.
  • Build teachers’ capacity to collect and analyze data to improve student learning specific to literacy.
  • Continuously acquire professional knowledge and stay current with developments in the educational field through seminars, workshops, professional meetings, or research.
  • Organize and maintain accurate record‑keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourage parental involvement in students’ education and communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Coordinate with elementary school professional staff members to evaluate curriculum and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Administer standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs and policies.
  • Demonstrate ethical and professional performance in compliance with district policy and the State Board of Education.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Master’s Degree in Education with a focus on literacy or equivalent required.
  • Valid Nebraska Teaching License in areas assigned.
  • Five years of successful teacher experience in a K‑5 classroom required; urban teaching experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Science of Reading, current teaching methods, and educational pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Patience and ability to work interactively with students and teachers.
  • Strong organization, time‑management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Prior literacy or instructional coaching experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with computer systems such as Microsoft Outlook and Infinite Campus.
  • Professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Professional dress and appearance standards.
  • Knowledge of OPS’s mission, purpose, and goals.
Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned.

Equipment

Requires use of Apple TV, projectors, iPads, and other media tools in addition to basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machine.

Travel

Limited travel may be required.
