Early Literacy Teacher Leader

Position

Purpose:

Provides one‑on‑one professional learning and coaching to elementary teachers in best practices in literacy development to improve literacy instruction so that all students are reading at or above grade level. Focuses on building teachers’ understanding of literacy, the art and science of instruction, and delivering professional learning sessions, modeling best practices, coaching staff on observed lessons, and collaborating with teachers to implement literacy strategies.

Provides direct instruction to students for literacy interventions at least 10% of the time.

Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Provide professional learning and coaching on school literacy initiatives consistent with district goals.
  • Analyze teacher practices through classroom observations, data analysis, and student work to guide coaching and professional learning.
  • Provide direct coaching feedback to teachers based on observations and analysis.
  • Track student and teacher progress to assist in coaching and provide data to drive professional learning.
  • Conduct student intervention groups and small‑group instruction at least 10% of time.
  • Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small‑group instruction.
  • Develop intervention plans and instructional materials and translate them into learning experiences to best utilize available time.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and modify instructional methods to fit individual student needs, including students with special needs.
  • Develop teachers’ capacity to collect and analyze data to improve student learning in literacy.
  • Instruct students in responsible citizenship and other subject matters specified by applicable laws and district regulations.
  • Continue to acquire professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, professional meetings, or research.
  • Organize and maintain accurate and complete record‑keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievements, and attendance as required.
  • Encourage parental involvement and effectively communicate with students and parents.
  • Coordinate with other elementary school professional staff to evaluate and assess curriculum and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Supervise students in activities that occur out of the classroom, including transportation activities.
  • Administer standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs and policies.
  • Demonstrate willingness and ability to comply with district and state professional performance standards.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Master’s Degree in Education with a focus on literacy or equivalent (required).
  • Valid Nebraska Teaching License in assigned areas (required).
  • Five years of successful K‑5 classroom teaching experience (required; urban experience preferred).
  • Advanced knowledge of evidence‑based literacy practices aligned with the science of reading.
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state education laws.
  • Ability and patience to work interactively with students and teachers.
  • Strong organization, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; collaborative coaching style.
  • Proficiency with computer systems such as Microsoft Outlook and Infinite Campus.
  • Professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Adherence to professional dress and appearance standards.
  • Familiarity with OPS mission, purpose, goals, and employee roles.
Equipment

This position may require the use of SMART boards and iPads in addition to basic office equipment (computers, copiers, scanners, fax machine). Employees must comply with OPS equipment guidelines.

Travel

Limited travel may be required.

  • Respond rapidly in emergency situations.
  • Maintain organization, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Work in school building environments.
