Nature of WorkThis is professional library work that involves management of library branch services or system-wide internal operation division (e.g., collection development, collection processing, circulation, and facilities). Work includes allocating funds, formulating policies, solving administrative problems, and recommending the hiring and termination of subordinate staff. An incumbent exercises considerable independent judgment in the performance of assigned duties and receives general guidance from a supervisor.
Education and ExperienceFour years of experience in professional library work, two years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity in the field of specialization. Graduation from a recognized college or university with a Masters Degree in Library Science from an accredited (ALA) school of Library Science.
Special QualificationsMust register for Nebraska Public Librarian Certification through the Nebraska Library Commission within 30 days of the hiring date. Must complete necessary continuing education requirements to keep certification current while employed by the Omaha Public Library. Must be able to transport oneself or coordinate transportation to locations throughout the City during the course of the work day. Must be able to work flexible schedules that include evenings and weekends.

$76,918.40 with step increases to $ Annually
BenefitsForty-hour work week. Paid leave per year: twelve days vacation; five days management; fifteen days sick; and fifteen holidays. Responsibilities- Directs branch services or internal operations by formulating library policies and procedures, establishing goals and objectives, and participating in problem-solving and long‑range planning.
- Supervises the managers of library departments and branches in their assigned area and provides leadership, oversight, and awareness of the services and operations of these managers to fulfill the Library's mission and goals.
- Delivers customer services to all library users, both internally and externally, including responding to customer comments and complaints.
- Coordinates the planning, implementation, and oversight of projects with department staff, staff from other city departments, vendors, contractors, and other community partners.
- Oversees the administration of the automated catalog and circulation system including monitoring and negotiating system contracts, loading software updates, and addressing system malfunctions.
- Approves and coordinates the effective use of library funds to select and purchase materials for the library.
- Oversees the library's acquisition, cataloging, and processing functions.
- Assists in the development of policies and procedures for the library.
- Recommends the hiring and termination of library personnel and directs performance evaluation of subordinate professional, para‑professional, and clerical staff.
- Participates in allocating and administering the library materials budget by analyzing fiscal reports and evaluating library needs.
- Attends conferences and meetings to foster innovative approaches to library services.
- Visits library branches regularly to meet with staff and attend events.
- Manages strategic partnerships by cultivating relationships with community organizations, schools, government entities, and local businesses to enhance library services and expand community impact.
- Develops and implements community engagement programs by leading the design and execution of programs and outreach efforts that address the unique needs of diverse communities, promoting equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
- Oversees staff development and training programs by identifying and implementing professional development opportunities for library staff, ensuring knowledge of current trends, technology, and best practices in librarianship.
