Position: Safety and Occupational Health Specialist.

Responsibilities

  • Support Safety and Occupational Health Office staff by conducting surveys and inspections of assigned serviced areas, structures, and other activities for compliance with Army, OSHA, and local safety regulations and consensus safety standards.
  • Support mishap and accident investigations, including near‑misses and property damage, to discover prevalent accident trends and identify prevention strategies.
  • Provide administrative support to the Occupational Health Program (OHP) and Occupational Health Nurse for the Omaha District.
  • Serve as an alternate Medical Records Custodian (MRC) and perform maintenance, physical security, transfer, and archiving of employees’ medical records.
  • Administer all procurement activities for Safety and Occupational Health Office needs and manage bulk procurement of District Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Provide technical assistance and coordinate fiscal and other administrative functions for the Safety Office.
  • Serve as safety office training coordinator, working with the district training office to ensure safety and occupational training guidance and materials are available for all District employees.
  • Administer the District Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), First Aid, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training programs.

  • Must have and be able to maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • May be required to drive standard Government vehicles.
  • Travel Away from Duty (TDY) up to 33% of duty time.

Education and Experience

Specialized

Experience:

One year of specialized experience in safety program management, accident prevention and control, safety education, or related health and safety activities for construction projects. This is the typical experience for a GS‑07 position.

Education: Master’s or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or a major study in safety or occupational health fields (e.g., safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene). Alternatively, a master’s or equivalent graduate degree in related fields that includes at least 24 semester hours in safety‑related disciplines.

Combination of

Education and Experience:

A combination of education and experience may qualify if the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. Compute the percentage by dividing the total months of experience by 12 and adding the percentage of graduate semester hours (beyond the first 18) divided by 18.

Time in Grade Requirement

Applicants who have held a GS‑09 position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade (GS‑07) or equivalent.

Foreign Education

Foreign educational credentials must be evaluated by a private organization specializing in foreign education equivalency or must have been granted full credit at a U.S. accredited institution.

Additional Requirements
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre‑Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Position includes a one‑year probationary period with evaluation of fitness and continued employment based on performance and conduct.
  • Direct deposit of pay is required.
  • Selection is subject to restrictions from the Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.
  • This is a Fire, Occupational Health, and Safety Career Field position.
  • Multiple positions may be filled from this announcement.
  • Salary includes applicable locality pay or local market supplement. Permanent Change of Station (PCS) costs are not authorized.
