Position Overview /Duties

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
Works under the general supervision of the section chief. Receives broad assignments in terms of overall desired objectives and independently completes work requiring a high level of technical expertise in accordance with standard procedures. Unusual or unprecedented problems are independently evaluated and acted upon while keeping the section chief informed of work status. Completed work is reviewed for accomplishment of desired objectives and adequacy of conclusions presented.

Duties
  • Performs a variety of duties related to hydrogeology, and geophysics. Performs and/or directs a variety of duties related to investigating and mapping the earth's surface and subsurface geologic conditions and assessing the impact of these features on civil, military, or hazardous and toxic and radiological waste (HTRW) projects. Directs the efforts of one or more Government or contract drill crews, as required.

  • Duties include, but are not limited to, the direction or performance of:
    1) soil, rock, or water sampling;
    2) site reconnaissance and inspection;
    3) literature and document review;
    4) geologic mapping;
    5) aquifer testing and groundwater monitoring;
    6) surface or down hole geophysical surveys;
    7) installation and maintenance of subsurface instrumentation;
    8) computer analyses or modeling of site conditions; and
    9) analyses of field data. This work is performed in support of foundation or facility design, operation and maintenance of dams and appurtenant structures, HTRW site remediation, groundwater supply development or restoration, seismic hazard analyses, assessments of environmental impacts, evaluations of project constructability, and other engineering or environmental tasks. 35%
  • Performs or directs project feasibility or constructability studies and/or preparation of plans and specifications for project features relevant to engineering geology including, but not limited to, well sand, well fields, subsurface excavations, groundwater control programs, and HTRW remedial actions. 10%
  • Prepares written reports and/or oral presentations on project goals and/or methods, geologic findings, conclusions, and project status. In support of these duties, geologic logs, cross-sections, contour maps, and other graphical representations of data will also be prepared as required. Duties also include attendance at meetings as the representative of the Omaha District for geological matters. 20%
  • Performs a variety of administrative functions to ensure the quality, cost effectiveness, and timeliness of technical work products. Completes time and attendance and labor code documentation, compiles travel order information for clerical staff, and accurately completes travel voucher in a timely manner. Ensures all TDY arrangements have been addressed prior to embarking on a TDY mission. 10%

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD, Section 9905 to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

  • This position requires that the incumbent possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver’s License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • Training/certifications:
    Required to obtain, maintain, and possess a Professional Geologist (PG) license/registration or equivalent Physical Scientist license registration within twenty-four (24) months of Entry on Duty (EOD).
