Job Description

The purpose of this position is to provide leadership and guidance to ensure the development and implementation of strategies for environmental policies and procedures that provide the direction for achievement of the company's related business goals and objectives.

Responsibilities

Lead the Environmental Program for Northern Natural Gas Company including the development and implementation of plans and programs to fulfill the environmental mission statement. Direct the activities of the department staff toward efficient accomplishment of environmental compliance in operations, new projects permitting and construction and remediation. Lead in consultation with individual staff members in developing strategy and tactics for dealing with regulatory and state agencies on specific issues related to compliance.

Manage remediation of sites to ensure compliance with regulations, permits and agency consent orders.
Prepare and submit reports to management on environmental compliance issues and recommend changes. Prepare and submit environmental reports to environmental agencies. (20-25%) Prepare and submit environmentally-related permit applications, as required. Represent Northern Natural Gas in verbal and written interaction with federal, state and local environmental agencies as well as at industry meetings and public hearings.
Maintain a working knowledge of current federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations which impact operations. Interpret these regulations and provide training to company personnel to ensure compliance with all above requirements.
Oversee development of greenhouse gas inventories and facility leakage audits for all compressor facilities and town border stations.
Critically review environmental scope, file permits, train and audit construction activities.
Write and/or critically review environmental procedures.
Review, comment and communicate new environmental legislation and regulations.
Perform administrative activities necessary for the effective management of the department, including employee safety, selection and development of employees, salary administration, budget administration, employee counseling and motivation, organization goals and objectives, and planning, organizing, integrating, measuring, and reporting the work performed within the department.

Qualifications

Perform any additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.
Bachelor's degree in environmental science or engineering. Advanced degree preferred.
Eight or more years of related experience, including three years of supervisory/ management responsibilities.
Knowledgeable of regulations.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills.
Must be able to effectively interface with sometimes conflicting interest groups to achieve mutually satisfactory results.

Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Project management skills; ability to prioritize and handle multiple issues and projects concurrently.
