POSITION SUMMARY
Viking Industrial Painting is a leader in the water tank maintenance, repair, and coatings in the Midwest region and expanding across the United States, with project locations extending from Northern Minnesota to Southern Texas, Florida to California.
We are seeking an Engineer with experience in water tank inspection, evaluation, and maintenance to support municipal and utility infrastructure projects. This role focuses on existing water storage assets (elevated tanks, ground storage reservoirs, standpipes, clear wells, digesters, etc.) and includes structural assessments, rehabilitation design support, condition reporting, and coordination with field inspection and construction teams.
The ideal candidate has a strong structural engineering background and understands the real-world condition issues of aging water tanks, works comfortably with inspection data, and can translate field findings into practical, code-compliant engineering recommendations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Engineering and Technical- Review and interpret inspection data (visual inspections, NDT results, coating assessments, corrosion measurements)
- Prepare engineering calculations, reports, and recommendations for repair, rehabilitation, or continued service
- Support rehabilitation design including:
- Shell repairs and reinforcement
- Roof replacements
- Modifications to rises, ladders, platforms, and appurtenances
- Foundation and anchorage upgrades
- Containment systems
- Prepare and submit construction permitting to state agencies
- Apply applicable codes and standards, including:
- AWWA (D100, D103, D102)
- NFPA 22
- ASCE 7
- IBC and applicable state/local codes
- Participate in field inspections (confined space, elevated work, occasional climbing)
- Coordinate with inspection technicians, coating inspectors, and construction teams
- Provide engineering support during construction, including:
- RFI responses
- Repair validation
- Field condition evaluations
- Scope of work considerations
- Assist with capital planning, condition scoring, and maintenance prioritization for municipal clients
- Serve as a technical point of contact for municipal owners, regulatory agencies, utilities, and project managers
- Support proposal development and scope definition for inspection and maintenance programs
- Communicate findings clearly to non-engineers (public works staff, operators, etc).
- Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred (or the ability to obtain within a defined timeframe)
- 3+ years of experience in structural engineering of existing structures
- Direct experience with water tanks, reservoirs, or similar steel structures
- Working knowledge of corrosion, coatings, and condition-based maintenance
- Ability to perform site visits and climb tanks as required
- Strong technical writing and report preparation skills
- Experience with municipal water infrastructure or utility clients
- Familiarity with inspection programs and asset management approaches
- Experience supporting industrial painting or tank rehabilitation projects
- Knowledge of confined space requirements and jobsite safety practices
- Experience with inspection drones, NDT methods, or thickness measurements
- Prior work with AWWA inspection or maintenance guidance
- Combination of in-office, remote, and field work required
- Regional travel (typically 10-30%), including occasional overnight stays
- Field work may involve climbing/work at heights, ladders, and confined spaces (with proper training and fall protection equipment).
