Responsibilities
Powering a brighter future starts with a resilient, reliable generation fleet - and that's where you come in. At Omaha Public Power District (OPPD), one of the nation's largest publicly owned electric utilities, our mission is to provide affordable, reliable, and environmentally responsible energy to the communities we serve. As we modernize our generation portfolio and support a diverse mix of assets from traditional fossil units to renewable energy and storage, strong engineering leadership is essential.
We are seeking a Manager of Power Generation Engineering to lead the engineering team responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of OPPD’s North Omaha Station and all Peaking Units, while also supporting the broader generation fleet, including owned solar, wind, and storage resources. This is a high-impact role for an experienced engineering leader who thrives at the intersection of technical excellence, operational strategy, and people development.
In this role, you will guide a team of system engineers who support plant operations, troubleshoot complex equipment issues, analyze system performance, and drive long-term reliability improvements. You’ll oversee the development and execution of multi-year engineering plans, lead the implementation of OPPD’s Equipment Reliability Program, and ensure that critical systems are monitored, maintained, and optimized. You will also play a key role in budget planning, regulatory compliance, and cross‑functional collaboration across Utility Operations.
As a leader, you will build and develop a high‑performing engineering team through OPPD’s Managerial Leadership Practices – ensuring your staff has the clarity, training, and support needed to excel. You’ll foster a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and technical rigor while helping shape the future of OPPD’s generation strategy.
- Build and maintain a competent/capable team of staff in alignment with OPPD’s practices.
- Effectively apply OPPD’s Managerial Leadership Practices (MLPs) for assigned staff.
- Develop and implement Individual Development Plans (IDPs) for all direct reports targeting specific performance gaps necessary to fulfill the work of the role.
- Oversee the development and implementation of IDPs for skip‑level reports, preparing them for roles within or across organizational scope.
- Develop and maintain a set of staff performance metrics.
- Reinforce, monitor and hold subordinate leaders accountable for the effective application of OPPD’s Manager Leadership Practices.
- Accountable to develop and implement plans and programs (1‑4 years in scope) to achieve OPPD and Utility Operations strategic objectives and deliver desired outputs/assigned KAs of the Engineering Services division.
- Lead the design, integration and ownership of all end‑to‑end processes, policies, and practices within the assigned scope of control, including building out the Equipment Reliability Program with UO stakeholders.
- Establish and execute an ongoing prioritization process for the team consistent with OPPD’s business objectives, policies, metrics, and strategies.
- Engage with/Support subordinate teams to influence decisions and outcomes aligned with strategic direction.
- Develop and maintain performance metrics (Past vs. Present and Predictive) and executive reporting.
- Assign primary and secondary system engineers based on expertise to track operating trends and corrective actions within the four‑year planning horizon, and provide input for ten‑year planning.
- Establish effective cross‑training programs to ensure adequate engineering support at each generating station for key systems.
- Support other BU groups to design and implement design changes to generating stations, including close‑out activities.
- Manage engineering support for emergent operational and maintenance issues at fossil and owned renewable units.
- Arrange and implement professional development of staff, including succession planning.
