Job Description

Identifies recommended actions related to pipeline safety, pipeline incident reporting, material quality and related design issues and communicates them to management. Provides professional input while assisting with the development of the company position concerning new pipeline and safety regulations concerning pipeline materials, welding, non‑destructive testing, corrosion, repairs and the implementation of safety regulations. Ensures compliance with the Department of Transportation’s pipeline integrity management program according to the requirements of the Pipeline Safety Regulations.

Participates in ongoing compliance with Pipeline & Hazardous Material Safety Administration regulations by assisting with internal audits and preparation for agency audits.

Responsibilities
  • Assists field operating locations to prepare for audits and inspections.
  • Assists in the development and management of the system integrity program with regard to integrity management of pipelines on the entire pipeline system.
  • Assists in the development of specifications for materials, pipeline construction, welding and welding inspection for large Northern projects to ensure accurate estimating, project planning and timely project completion.
  • Coordinates outside metallurgical services; interprets the results of laboratory analysis provided by third‑party metallurgical services as required.
  • Provides guidance on integrity activities associated with materials to management, engineering, pipeline safety and teams as required.
  • Develops and provides interpretation and implementation recommendations for engineering standards and operating procedures as it relates to the metallurgical field and pipeline integrity program.
  • Directs failure investigations and prepares analysis reports.
  • Analyzes pipeline data management system deficiencies and advises on necessary corrections to meet TVC regulatory requirements.
  • Reviews welding procedure qualification tests, and approves testing facilities.
  • Ensures Northern metallurgy related including welding procedures are current with latest codes.
  • Prepares and presents training related to code compliance activities to others in the organization.
  • Participates in industry/Office of Pipeline Safety risk management and integrity program activities.
  • Coordinates federal and state pipeline safety agency audits.
  • Represents the company on industry research and code committees.
  • Provides technical leadership to staff. (0‑5%)
  • Provides technical input to assist in development of project planning. (0‑5%)
  • Performs any additional responsibilities as requested or assigned. (0‑5%)
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (metallurgy or materials science).
  • Engineer I – Internship preferred.
  • Engineer II – One to three years' experience.
  • Sr Engineer – Eight or more years of related experience in metallurgy. An advanced degree preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Title 49 CFR Parts 190–199 (Pipeline Safety Regulations), NNG engineering standards and operating procedures a plus.
  • Pipeline welding or weld inspection experience.
  • Knowledge of API 1104 and ASME welding codes.
  • Must effectively communicate and interact internally and externally at levels from executive to field teams.
  • Strong technical, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Excellent computer skills – Microsoft Office and company applications.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, as well as technical writing skills.
  • Effective analytical, problem‑solving and decision‑making skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
  • Support the company's employee policies and procedures, including workplace safety rules.
