Position: Distribution Engineering Designer I

Overview

The Distribution Engineer Designer I (DED I) position is the first level of the DED career track where progression is based on time in grade and performance. The role involves providing designs for electrical distribution systems such as overhead and underground circuits for joint use, lighting, and commercial, industrial and residential development.

Duties, Responsibilities & Other
  • Producing electric distribution design drawings and Bill Of Materials (BOM) necessary for simple projects.
  • Performing field data collection using standard tools and processes and carrying out necessary project‑specific inspections accurately and efficiently.
  • Conducting technical analyses including cable pulling calculations, cable voltage‑drop calculations, transformer loading calculations, and pole loading analysis calculations.
  • Familiarizing with client construction standards, construction and workflow processes, and customer charging guidelines as required.
  • Generating permitting and other project supporting documentation as needed.
  • Understanding the hazards and dangers of the distribution system and mitigating hazards during office and field work.
  • Actively looking out for others’ safety in all aspects of this work.
  • Attending and engaging in scheduled safety meetings and adhering to driving and site hazard identification, mitigation and reporting training.
  • May have the opportunity to work on a storm response local or travel team as a Driver and Assessor Learner.
  • Primary work in an office environment with significant field work; may require exposure to inclement weather (extreme heat/cold, high humidity, rain, snow, icy conditions) and potential threats from insects, animals, and vegetation.

  • Pole Analysis software
  • WMS experience (e.g., Maximo)
  • Understanding of Electrical Components and Circuit knowledge of electrical components
  • Advanced distribution techniques (switch gear, capacitor banks)
  • Conduit systems
  • Knowledge of reliability schemes
  • Field and workzone safety
Qualifications
  • Four‑year ABET‑accredited Engineering degree.
  • FE/EIT preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Pre‑employment drug screening and background check conditions of employment.
