Job Description & How to Apply Below
We at Branch Pattern are committed to building our company with great people like you, people who represent the best in their profession. We are looking for talented minds with a common purpose, to improve life through a better built environment, to grow with us.

Branch Pattern is a place where you can make a difference while building a meaningful and rewarding career. Our employees are fun, passionate, and innovative change agents who strive to deliver award winning work. Our engineers work on highly complex buildings such as healthcare, research, and other mission critical facilities, where system performance, resilience, and long term reliability are essential. As building owners increasingly pursue decarbonization, this work demands deeper engineering judgment and a more integrated approach to mechanical systems design.

We are seeking a Mechanical Systems Engineer who is drawn to technically demanding problems and complex building systems. This role is centered on advanced building scale engineering today, with opportunities to apply those same skills to central plants, shared systems, and campus scale energy strategies as projects require. This role requires comfort with ambiguity, non standard conditions, and engineering decisions that balance performance, reliability, and long term outcomes.

Requirements
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE), or ability to obtain licensure
  • 5+ years of experience designing and analyzing complex mechanical systems for buildings
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering
  • Experience with technically demanding facilities such as healthcare, laboratories, or other mission critical environments
  • Strong interest in decarbonization, system efficiency, and performance driven design.
Key Responsibilities

Complex Mechanical Systems Engineering
  • Lead and support the design of advanced HVAC and thermal systems for buildings with high operational, reliability, and performance requirements.
  • Develop system concepts, calculations, and design strategies that address redundancy, maintainability, and life cycle outcomes, not just code compliance.
  • Solve non standard engineering problems where precedent solutions may not apply.
  • Apply sound engineering judgment to evaluate competing system approaches and tradeoffs.
Centralized and Shared Energy Systems
  • Support projects involving central plants, shared mechanical systems, or campus scale infrastructure when applicable.
  • Evaluate system strategies such as central heating and cooling plants, heat recovery, thermal energy storage, and large scale electrification.
  • Leverage experience gained from complex buildings, particularly healthcare facilities, to inform larger, integrated energy systems.
Decarbonization Focused Design
  • Integrate decarbonization goals into mechanical system design, including electrification, efficiency improvements, and low carbon system selection.
  • Collaborate with sustainability and building science teams to align mechanical strategies with energy and emissions performance targets.
  • Support early stage analysis to help clients understand technical and operational implications of decarbonization pathways.
Collaboration and Technical Communication
  • Work closely with architects, electrical engineers, and other disciplines to develop coordinated, technically sound designs.
  • Contribute to technical narratives and client deliverables that clearly explain system rationale and performance implications.
  • Communicate complex engineering concepts in a clear, practical manner to both technical and non technical stakeholders.
Professional Growth and Technical Leadership
  • Stay current with evolving technologies, codes, and best practices related to complex mechanical systems and building decarbonization.
  • Contribute to internal standards, tools, and knowledge development as Branch Pattern advances its energy and systems expertise.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support a culture of technical rigor and curiosity.
Desired Qualifications
  • Deep experience with healthcare or other mission critical buildings featuring large, interdependent mechanical systems.
  • Exposure to central plant systems or shared infrastructure serving multiple buildings.
  • Familiarity with electrification strategies, heat recovery, and low carbon HVAC technologies.
  • Comfort working in early design phases where scope, systems, and constraints are still being defined.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work across disciplines.
