The Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) organization is seeking a Senior Safety Engineer. In this role, you will partner with Amazon Worldwide Design Engineering teams to ensure new equipment and modifications to existing equipment installed in operational Amazon buildings comply with all applicable codes, regulations, and harmonized standards. You will also partner with operations, reliability, maintenance, business operations leaders, field WHS teams, and other key stakeholders.
Additionally, you will lead risk assessments, assist in the development and review of equipment designs, and provide guidance on controls and devices. This role will functionally partner with all engineering teams to drive a systematic approach to risk identification, mitigation, and safety management.
Travel is required 25–50% of the time.
Key Responsibilities- Complete risk evaluations in accordance with ISO
12100 and ANSI B11 practices - Support the development of policies, standards, training, and safe operating procedures
- Interpret and apply regulations, codes, bylaws, and all relevant standards
- Advise partner engineering organizations and operations teams on regulatory compliance concerns and good engineering practices related to equipment design
- Participate in new standard developments with Engineering, Amazon Robotics, Injury Prevention Specialists, RME, Operations, and other key stakeholders
- Work with various teams to review and approve designs of new equipment and modifications to existing equipment
- Display improvement projects
- Maintain all regulatory compliance documentation to ensure accurate and up‑to‑date adherence to standards
- Participate in the development of new organizational standards
- Manage projects that require certifications that comply with local, national, and international regulations
- Understand equipment certification requirements (CE, UL, etc.) and experience working with NRTLs
- Integrate control systems into the design of new and existing equipment
- Work with WHS safety teams, technical engineering teams, and suppliers to specify safety or other risk‑related requirements for projects across multiple regions
- Contribute to building a safety culture that enables technical engineering teams to develop safe and compliant products, systems, and solutions
This role demands an effective communicator who can send clear, concise, and consistent messages both verbally and in writing. You should possess excellent program management skills, knowledge of control systems, environmental and ergonomic design principles, and a strong applied understanding of regional and international regulations, codes, and standards.
Basic Qualifications- Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans, and functional test procedures
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering
- 3+ years of owning program strategy, end‑to‑end delivery, and communicating results to senior leadership
- Experience using data and metrics to drive improvements
- 6+ years of experience in safety engineering programs in a manufacturing or production environment
- Knowledge of certification bodies for approvals that comply with local, national, and international regulations
- Knowledge of international and EU/NA Standards such as EU Machinery Directive, ISO, ANSI, OSHA, NFPA
- Working knowledge and experience with National Recognized Test Laboratory (NRTL) and Notified Bodies
- Understanding of core business systems and/or broad knowledge of company systems/technologies relevant to safety engineering
- Experience prioritizing and handling multiple assignments while meeting deadlines
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities
- Ability to communicate complex concepts through written and verbal communication
- Experience working with fast‑moving, high‑performance teams and driving innovative solutions tailored to unique business environments
- Master’s degree preferred – Mechanical, Structural, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering
- CSME or other functional safety certification

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign‑on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
