The Transportation Design Project Manager leads and delivers a wide range of traffic engineering and transportation design projects, from small to mid-sized traffic assignments to larger multi-disciplinary efforts. This role oversees data collection, technical analyses, modeling, and documentation to identify and address traffic operations and safety deficiencies for all modes of travel. The position combines hands-on technical traffic analysis and design with project management, client interaction, staff mentoring, and business development responsibilities.
Responsibilities
+ Manage and deliver small to mid-sized traffic engineering projects and tasks, as well as traffic components of larger multi-disciplinary projects from start to finish.
+ Oversee planning and execution of data collection activities to support traffic studies and transportation design efforts.
+ Perform technical traffic analyses to identify traffic operations and safety-related deficiencies for all modes of transportation.
+ Develop travel demand forecasts for current and future conditions to support planning, design, and operational decisions.
+ Apply microsimulation software such as VISSIM and Trans Modeler, and capacity analysis tools such as Synchro/Sim Traffic and SIDRA, to evaluate traffic operations and prepare engineering and traffic reports.
+ Prepare clear, well-structured technical documentation, including traffic impact studies, safety studies, and other traffic engineering reports.
+ Participate in and present project findings in writing and at client meetings, technical group gatherings, and day or evening public meetings.
+ Identify mitigation alternatives and safety countermeasures to address current and future traffic operations and safety deficiencies.
+ Evaluate alternatives and document measures of effectiveness to support recommendations for proposed improvements.
+ Lead traffic design tasks, including development of alternatives and design/construction plans to maintain traffic during construction of transportation improvements.
+ Prepare signing, pavement marking, and traffic signal design and construction documents based on MUTCD guidance and standards.
+ Ensure traffic signal and signing plans conform to applicable traffic engineering guidance documents and industry best practices.
+ Oversee and direct the analytical work of engineers and planners, providing technical guidance and quality review.
+ Mentor staff in technical skills, project execution, and professional development.
+ Participate in business development efforts, including assisting in the development of proposals to secure new traffic-related work and supporting pursuits for multi-discipline projects.
+ Collaborate effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders to coordinate project tasks, schedules, and deliverables.
+ Maintain a strong sense of urgency and self-initiative to meet client deadlines and project milestones.
Essential Skills
+ Bachelor's degree in engineering.
+ Approximately 5 years of experience in transportation operations and safety roles.
+ Specific experience preparing traffic impact analyses, safety studies, signal and communications designs, signal timings, and/or major feasibility studies.
+ Transportation engineering experience with a focus on traffic operations and safety.
+ Licensed Professional Civil Engineer, licensed in or capable of obtaining licensure in Nebraska.
+ Experience in civil engineering and transportation design.
+ Proficiency with traffic microsimulation tools such as VISSIM and Trans Modeler.
+ Proficiency with capacity analysis and modeling tools such as Synchro/Sim Traffic and SIDRA.
+
Experience with design software such as Micro Station and Open Roads.
+ Knowledge of traffic engineering guidance documents and standards, including MUTCD, ITE, NACTO, and related industry best practices.
+ Proven ability to manage traffic engineering projects from initiation through completion.
+ Strong technical and qualitative writing ability for reports, studies, and proposals.
+ Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
+ High level of energy and strong problem-solving skills.
+ Demonstrated sense of urgency and self-initiative to meet client deadlines.
Additional
Skills & Qualifications
+ Professional Engineering License preferred, with the ability to obtain licensure in Nebraska if not already licensed.
+ Professional Transportation Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification is a plus.
+ Road Safety Professional (RSP) certification is a plus.
+ Engagement in life-long learning to maintain knowledge of contemporary transportation and traffic engineering issues.
+ Experience overseeing and directing the analytical work of engineers and planners.
+ Experience mentoring staff and contributing to their professional growth.
+ Experience participating in business development activities, including proposal development for traffic-related and multi-disciplinary projects.
