Trenchless Geotechnical Team Lead

Responsible for planning, managing, and orchestrating geologic and geotechnical initiatives associated with trenchless technologies, including engineering, design, and construction applications.

Primary Responsibilities

The Trenchless Geotechnical Team Lead will report to the Trenchless Services Engineering Lead and will apply geologic information to engineering and design practices, lead and coordinate geotechnical exploration campaigns, evaluate subsurface conditions, recommend solutions to problematic geologic conditions, and integrate geotechnical data into project deliverables.

Expected Day‑to‑Day Tasks
  • Lead and execute comprehensive geotechnical investigations for trenchless projects, including field work, overseeing subcontracted drilling crews, soil and rock logging and testing, data collection, laboratory coordination, analysis, and report generation.
  • Prepare and generate geotechnical data reports and engineering reports.
  • Serve as a local resource to HDR’s Area of Operations, representing the Trenchless Services team in investigations, site visits, and client meetings.
  • Manage geotechnical data using Open Ground and/or gINT, generating deliverables such as boring logs and cross sections for design drawings.
  • Perform data management and quality control of geological data.
  • Assist in geotechnical analyses of subsurface conditions, calculating parameters for models such as hydraulic fracture and inadvertent returns analyses (HFIAs) and providing mitigation recommendations.
  • Incorporate geological and geotechnical data into critical determinations during design and construction, creating cross sections for HFIAs and generating design reports.
  • Advance capabilities in software programs for generating trenchless deliverables, including gINT, Open Ground, ArcGIS Pro, and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Support other business groups within HDR, maintaining commodity‑neutral trenchless services.
  • Provide engineering, design, and field services across all regions and business groups, monitoring construction activities, interfacing with contractors, and communicating with clients and team members off‑site.
  • Travel as necessary, including long‑term trips, for field work, site reconnaissance, field logging, and oversight of investigations, while maintaining high‑quality, timely data presentation.
  • Lead and manage workload, delegating responsibilities to geologists or geotechnical professionals to execute investigation campaigns.
  • Lead a team of geotechnical professionals—geologists, specialists, or engineers—managing workload, accountability, communications, mentoring, performance reviews, required trainings, planning, resource forecasting, cost estimating, scheduling, and risk management.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience
  • Professional registration, license, or certification may be required based on role
  • Strong communication and listening skills
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills
  • Commitment to active participation in an employee‑owned culture is a must
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in Open Ground software
  • Proven ability to work and communicate successfully in remote environments
  • Experience leading and managing direct reports
  • Experience managing subconsultants
  • Four‑year degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geology, or related field
  • Team‑oriented with a strong desire to lead and drive geotechnical initiatives
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, gINT, ArcGIS, Auto Desk
  • Strong writing skills
  • Travel required
  • PE and/or PG credentials
  • Knowledge and understanding of ASTM Standards for geotechnical concepts and subsurface material classification
Compensation

Expected salary range: $120,182 – $172,810, based on skills, experience, education, and location.
