Community Banking Internship

Any one of our 6 branches (Nebraska Branches: Omaha, Elkhorn, Nebraska City. Iowa Branches: Oakland, Sidney, Hamburg)

Hours:

Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm, occasional Saturday

Summary Description

Arbor Bank’s Community Banking Internship is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to community banking. Anchored in Deposit Services—the central hub of branch operations—this internship equips students with foundational banking knowledge before rotating through multiple bank departments and is ideal for students exploring banking careers. Interns will gain exposure to banking careers, daily operations, train alongside experienced banking professionals, and participate in developmental check-ins with bank leadership.

Qualifications
  • Current college student pursuing a degree in finance, accounting, or a related field
  • Coursework and/or experience that supports a strong understanding of financial accounting (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow, financial ratios, analysis of revenue, expenses and assets)
  • Demonstrated interest in building a career within banking, credit, or financial services.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow compliance requirements
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Curiosity and a willingness to learn all aspects of banking
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Professionalism, reliability, and strong organizational skills
Training & Rotations

Interns will spend their first weeks fully immersed in Deposit Services to build a strong operational knowledge base. Training includes:

  • Account opening and account maintenance
  • Teller transactions and frontline customer service
  • Deposit operations and compliance fundamentals
  • Basic banking systems, procedures, and workflows

This phase ensures interns gain a thorough understanding of branch operations before rotating to other departments.

Rotational Leadership & Foundational Knowledge (Weeks 4–5)

Interns will split their time between continued Deposit Services training and sessions with bank leaders to understand core strategic and operational functions.

Leadership exposure may include:

  • Bank President – Bank structure, business strategy, leadership vision
  • Chief Financial Officer (CFO) – Financial reporting, liquidity management, capital planning
  • Chief Credit Officer (CCO) – Credit risk, commercial lending, loan analysis
  • Chief Operations Officer – Business communication
  • First Express Insurance (FEI) – Insurance services and integration with banking
  • Mortgage Division – Mortgage products and loan processes

This segment broadens interns’ understanding of the bank’s executive and operational framework.

Departmental Rotations & Hands‑On Learning (Weeks 6–12)

Interns will spend 2–3 days per week in Deposit Services while rotating through a variety of departments for immersive, functional training.

  • Provide an overview of their core responsibilities
  • Train interns on at least the top three departmental accountabilities
  • Offer hands‑on or project‑based learning when feasible

Potential Rotation Departments Include:

  • Consumer Lending – Loan processing, customer interaction, underwriting basics
  • Credit Department – Credit analysis and loan underwriting fundamentals
  • Loan Processing – Documentation, booking, compliance review
  • Treasury Management – Cash‑flow solutions, business banking services
  • Commercial Lending – Portfolio management, financial analysis, client meeting preparation, business development exposure
  • Agricultural Lending – Portfolio management, financial analysis, client meeting preparation, business development exposure
Weekly Check‑Ins & Professional Development
