Sales Tax Manager

Monday – Friday | Full-Time

Southern Carlson is seeking a Sales Tax Manager to join our corporate accounting team. This position reports directly to our Controller and plays an essential role in supporting the financial compliance and information reporting needs of the business as well as contributing to profitability through identification and implementation of cost control strategies.

What You’ll Do
  • Manage sales tax system setup and maintenance by working with Accounting and IT teams to ensure accurate tax calculations in ERP systems and Avalara.
  • Lead state and local sales and use tax audits, gather required documentation, and defend company tax positions to reduce audit exposure and penalties.
  • Oversee the collection, validation, and renewal of customer exemption and resale certificates using Avalara.
  • Ensure accurate and timely filing of monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns across multiple jurisdictions within Avalara.
  • Assist field with sales tax credits and invoice adjustments.
  • Prepare, file, and renew business licenses and registrations to maintain compliance with state and local requirements.
  • Monitor changes in state and local tax laws and communicate business and financial impacts to relevant stakeholders.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5+ years of dedicated state and local tax experience.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and technical research skills. Ability to bridge the gap between complex tax regulations and practical business operations.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with tax software, Avalara, and ERP systems.
  • Strong knowledge of sales and use tax regulations, including the tax treatment of real property improvements and tangible personal property.
