Position: Certified Pharmacy Technician - 16 Hours/Week - Rotating Shifts

Work Schedule:

Must work a minimum of one 8-hour shift per week and every other weekend, both Saturday and Sunday. Opportunity to pick up additional hours.

Under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, this role assists in the various activities of the pharmacy department that do not require the professional judgment of the pharmacist. The employee functions in strict accordance with standard, written procedures and guidelines, triages medication requests and determines priorities, processes orders and notifies the pharmacist as appropriate, and manufactures, packages, and labels drug products as needed.

Performs aseptic compounding of parenteral admixtures and other sterile dosage forms. The responsibilities include the practice of aseptic technique, proper procedures for preparing all types of parenteral admixtures (excluding chemotherapy or other specialty solutions), preparation of the label and any control records, proper technique for visual inspection of parenteral solutions, and documentation of quality control.

Performs various functions associated with an institutional drug distribution system including use of drug dispensing and compounding automation, viewing medication orders in the pharmacy computerized system, preparation of medications for patients, and the procedures that apply to record keeping and dispensing of controlled substances, non-formulary drugs and the delivery and exchange of medications.

Participates in the training and/or orientation of new pharmacy employees, interacts effectively with other members of the health care team on a regular basis, maintains honesty and attentiveness to the rights of patients, maintains confidentiality of patient information, performs other tasks as assigned and handles all medical requests and processes orders for clients.

Responsibilities
  • Communicate transfer of medication issues between pharmacy team.
  • Stir up all issues and pending transactions and communicate to staff for completion.
  • Sterile compounding management:
    Pass low risk level competency and manage flow of products.
  • Pass medium risk level competency and manage flow of products.
  • Central pharmacy management:
    Answer telephone calls on a respectable level and complete necessary follow-up.
  • Manage unit dose area, including Omnicell.
  • Operate and manage pharmacy equipment (carousel, UD packager, etc).
  • Operate controlled substance system (CSM), manage associated paperwork, understand controlled substance policies.
  • Address crash cart and other kits/trays (e.g., perfusion, anesthesia) prior to end of shift.
  • Uphold customer service expectations, as defined in the Employee Standards of Behavior.
  • Patient care unit management:
    Complete all Omnicell pending and loads prior to end of shift.
  • All credits are checked per shift, returned to pharmacy, and put in proper location.
  • Teamwork:
    Complete orders to point of delivery, conduct visual inspections while staffing.
  • Follow established policies and procedures for pharmacy operations.
  • Respect pharmacist oversight of activities; accept feedback from pharmacists.
  • Central pharmacy:
    Actions represent best interest of patient (observational).
  • Follow all safety alerts:
    Code Red;
    Code Triage;
    Code Adam.
  • Hazardous drugs:
    Demonstrate ability to safely handle and deliver hazardous drugs.
  • IV room responsibilities:
    Triage medication requests and prioritize accordingly, process orders, notify pharmacist accordingly; compound, package, and label drug products as needed; perform aseptic technique and prepare intravenous admixtures; prepare proper labeling and conduct visual inspections and documentation for quality control.
  • Main pharmacy responsibilities:
    Perform various duties associated with an institutional drug distribution system, including batch runs; use drug dispensing and compounding automation; view medication orders in the Cerner computer system; prepare medication for patients; record keeping and dispensing of controlled substances, non-formulary drugs and delivery and exchange of medications.
  • Universal pharmacy responsibilities:
    Participate in training and orientation of new pharmacy supportive personnel; interact effectively with other members of the Healthy System team while maintaining honesty and attentiveness to the rights of patients and confidentiality of patient information; help maintain sufficient inventory level for all medications and supplies in all areas of the Pharmacy Department.
Job Requirements Education
  • High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) required.
Experience
  • Age at least 18 years of age with no current drug or alcohol addiction/convictions of any drug related misdemeanor or felony.
  • Some experience in a hospital pharmacy preferred.
License/Certifications
  • Registration with work state as a Pharmacy Technician (RPHT.NE) or Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPHT.IA) at the start of employment required.
