The PACS Support Specialist ensures reliable, secure, and efficient Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) operations for radiologists, clients, and internal teams. This role serves as first-line support for imaging workflow issues, safeguards data integrity, and collaborates closely with Endpoint Services and Systems Engineering to keep reading environments stable and performant.
Job Functions- Monitor PACS health, queues, and storage daily to ensure availability and performance
- Support integrations with RIS/EHR and imaging modalities; administer and troubleshoot HL7 (ORM/ORU) and DICOM routing under the direction of the PACS Administrator
- Provide first‑level PACS troubleshooting for radiologists and technologists; document steps and outcomes; elevate complex cases to the PACS Administrator and vendors
- Ensure secure, accurate storage/retrieval and transfer of imaging data; perform routine data integrity and retention audits and remediate discrepancies
- Collaborate with Endpoint Services to resolve workstation, network, and access issues impacting PACS usage; coordinate multi‑team responses when required
- Maintain and expand SOPs, runbooks, and user guidance in the knowledge base (Confluence) to drive first‑contact resolution and reduce MTTR
- Assist with PACS user training (best practices, image workflow, viewer features); provide cross‑training to IT Service Desk on PACS basics
- Contribute feedback on system performance and enhancement opportunities; participate in vendor coordination to meet SLAs
- Uphold HIPAA, security, and privacy policies; enforce least‑privilege access and secure handling of PHI across all activities
- This role participates in the organization’s 24x7x365 on‑call rotation
- Experience supporting PACS platforms (e.g., One Pacs, Intelerad) with strong troubleshooting discipline and customer service
- Understanding of imaging workflows (CT, MRI, X‑ray), DICOM standards, HL7 messaging, and worklist behavior
- Familiarity with Windows Server, SQL/Postgre
SQL databases, networking concepts (VPNs, firewalls), and certificate management relevant to imaging systems - Ability to write clear, reusable documentation and to communicate effectively with clinical and non‑technical users
- Certifications such as PACS Fundamentals or vendor credentials; ITIL Foundation a plus
- Associate’s degree in IT/Healthcare IT or equivalent experience
- 5+ years in healthcare IT with exposure to PACS or radiology systems
