Nature of WorkThis is general police work that involves enforcement of all ordinances, statutes, and laws in accordance with Police Department policies and procedures. Tasks may include crime prevention, investigation and detection, protection of life and property, traffic control, and maintaining law and order in the community.
Education and ExperienceHigh school graduate or equivalent. Citizen of the United States prior to completion of certification training. Twenty‑one years of age prior to completion of the training program. Valid motor vehicle operator’s license. Good character as determined by background investigation, including but not limited to the following:
- No convictions (or pardoned) of crimes punishable by imprisonment of one year or more, including Class 1 misdemeanors.
- No convictions of driving while intoxicated or under the influence in the two years immediately preceding admission.
- No punitive discharge from the United States Armed Forces.
- No denial, revocation, or suspension of certification status in this or another jurisdiction.
- No convictions of crimes involving threat or actual use of physical violence that would constitute a Class I misdemeanor.
- No convictions of crimes involving threat of or actual sexual assault or abuse.
- No convictions of crimes of physical violence or sexual abuse against a child or children.
- No convictions of domestic violence as defined in U.S. Code 18 USC 922(g)(9) that would disqualify from possessing a firearm.
- No order of protection that would disqualify from possessing a firearm under U.S. Code 922(g)(8).
- No indication of physical, mental, or emotional incapacity.
- No frequent criminal violations indicating disrespect for law and rights of others.
- No frequent traffic violations indicating disregard for traffic laws within the past three years.
- No pattern of substance abuse.
- No marijuana use for any purpose in the two years preceding application.
- No use of illegal drugs or narcotics other than marijuana in the five years preceding application.
Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English at the eleventh‑grade level. Certified by a licensed physician as able to meet the physical requirements of a police officer one year or less prior to admission, per State Statute 81‑1414, Title 79, Chapter 4.
Pay Range$79,580.80 with step increases to $ annually.
