Primary Purpose
Fabricate parts for structural fabrication, Service Center, and misc. steel assemblies per cutting lists, shop drawings, and DWS quality requirements.
Essential Job Functions- Identify steel shapes, sizes, and mill tolerances.
- Fabricate material as trained and instructed.
- Fabricate beams, tubes, angle, channel, bar grating, pipe, plate, or rounds according to the dimensions shown on cut lists and shop drawings, AISC code requirements for structural steel, and machine capabilities.
- Make adjustments to machine to ensure accurate dimensions as shown on the shop drawings.
- Identify cut list and shop drawing errors and discrepancies before or during early stages of fabrication.
- Operate forklifts, jib cranes, overhead cranes, conveyors, and transfers to move materials.
- Attend all meetings as required by management.
- Consistently and reliably works scheduled hours at assigned locations.
- Read, write, and perform higher arithmetic computations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, decimals and fractions.
- Understand and carry out semi-complicated verbal and written instructions.
- Communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors and managers.
- Work under periodic supervision focused on the progress of work and setting priorities for job completion.
- Use a tape measure, 1" rule, or auto measurer.
- Pass a Drake‑Williams Steel administered test covering shop drawing interpretation, fractional number calculations, basic geometry, etc.
- Interpret, understand, and utilize cutting lists, shop orders, and shop drawings.
- Use a computer for cut lists and inventory purposes.
- Demonstrate interest in own workmanship, attention to detail, and work safely.
- Operate forklifts and overhead cranes safely and properly; understand industry hand signals used for crane operations.
- Perform minor mechanical tasks on machine (blade changes, cleaning, etc.).
- Follow inventory procedures.
- Multitask.
- Stand frequently for the 8 to 12 hour shift.
- Walk frequently and sometimes for distances up to 60 feet.
- Sit only during breaks and lunch periods.
- Lift weights up to 20 lb from floor to chest continuously; 35 lb from floor to waist frequently; and 60 lb occasionally.
- Carry weights over distances up to 60 feet.
- Climb occasionally onto or over conveyors.
- Stoop, crouch, kneel, and crawl as required.
- Reach forward and overhead occasionally.
- Push and pull drawers and materials as needed, with force up to 35 lb.
- Push material into machine for fabrication.
- Use gross finger dexterity for tools and equipment; fine finger dexterity not required.
- Work 40 hours a week; overtime and weekend work may be required.
- Be aware of safety issues.
- Read and interpret shop drawings with visual acuity; safety glasses required.
- Occasionally encounter heat, cold, wet, humid conditions, fumes, odors, dusts, solvents, greases, oils, and coolants.
- Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment: steel‑toe safety shoes, hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, and hard hats.
Pencil, square, tape measure, markers, ball peen hammer, wire brushes, 4" grinder, sledgehammer, grab hooks, vise grips, Allen wrenches, pry‑bar, C‑clamps, band cutters, and chains.
Machines UtilizedSaw, overhead crane, jib crane, pallets, transfers, brake, blaster, punch, shear, and forklifts.
Experience and Education Required- High School degree or equivalent.
- Minimum of six months of experience in a steel manufacturing environment.
