Description Position Summary
Reporting to the Lead Lighting Project Manager, the Lighting Systems Technician is responsible for the onsite implementation, commissioning, programming, troubleshooting, service, and support of theatrical and architectural lighting systems. This role executes final system startup, validates system performance, performs hardware and software upgrades, and provides customer training to ensure lighting systems operate safely, reliably, and in accordance with project requirements and manufacturer specifications.
This is a field-based position requiring extensive travel and direct client interaction. The Lighting Systems Technician serves as Heartland's primary technical representative during commissioning, service, and closeout activities and directly influences customer satisfaction, system reliability, and project success.
Success in this role requires strong technical expertise, independent problem‑solving ability, excellent customer communication skills, and a commitment to quality, safety, and continuous learning.
Essential FunctionsThe specific breakdown of time spent on different tasks will vary based on the workload and the priorities of the clients. The following is an estimated breakdown of duties and time spent on each.
Project Preparation & Mobilization – 20%- Review project documentation, drawings, specifications, and programming requirements prior to mobilization.
- Verify bill of materials, equipment, software, and required components are complete and available.
- Coordinate schedules with Project Managers, Operations personnel.
- Identify scope gaps, technical concerns, and readiness issues before deployment.
- Understand project objectives, commissioning requirements, and customer expectations.
- Prepare tools, equipment, documentation, and testing resources required for successful field execution.
- Energize, commission, and validate theatrical and architectural lighting systems.
- Perform low-voltage wiring terminations, verification, and testing.
- Assemble, install, focus, and configure lighting fixtures and associated equipment.
- Program, configure, and test lighting consoles, processors, and control systems.
- Verify proper system operation against project requirements and manufacturer specifications.
- Perform system testing, troubleshooting, and performance validation prior to customer turnover.
- Ensure completed systems are fully operational and ready for client use.
- Diagnose technical issues involving lighting controls, fixtures, networking, software, and system integration.
- Perform repairs, upgrades, firmware updates, and corrective actions as required.
- Communicate troubleshooting progress and recommendations clearly to clients and project stakeholders.
- Respond to service calls and support requests in a professional and timely manner.
- Minimize return mobilizations through effective root‑cause analysis and issue resolution.
- Document field modifications, service activities, and system changes accurately.
- Conduct end‑user training on lighting systems, controls, and operational procedures.
- Provide customers with required documentation, reports, drawings, and closeout materials.
- Ensure customers understand system operation, maintenance requirements, and support procedures.
- Support successful project turnover and customer acceptance activities.
- Complete service reports, commissioning documentation, field markups, and project records.
- Maintain accurate documentation of system configurations and revisions.
- Complete manufacturer training and certification requirements.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and technical skill development.
