Grants Coordinator

Summary:

United Way of the Midlands is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Grants Coordinator (Prospect Development) to support our continued organizational growth and evolution.

This role offers a unique opportunity for an early-career professional with strong research and writing skills to expand their knowledge of the grants and nonprofit landscape. The idea candidate has strong communication skills, persistence and an eagerness to grow in a purpose-driven environment.

In this role, you will support the identification and development of new grant opportunities, working closely with an experienced Grants Manager and collaborating with teams across Donor Engagement, Finance, Analytics, and Programming. You will contribute to proposal development, research, and tracking processes that help ensure alignment with organizational strategy and funder priorities.

This position is ideal for someone curious, organized, and eager to grow professionally while contributing to United Way’s four impact areas:
Healthy Community, Financial Security, Youth Opportunity, and Community Resilience.

Responsibilities:

  • Proactively identify and research new grant opportunities that align with UWM’s mission and impact areas.
  • Supports the development of at least three new grant proposals per month by assisting with drafting and organizing narratives, budgets, and supporting materials.
  • Contributes to drafting clear, compelling content for proposals, letters of inquiry, reports, and other funder communications. Help prepare backgrounders and briefings for meetings with program officers.
  • Collaborates with internal teams to gather data, clarify program goals, and help ensure proposal alignment.
  • Helps maintain the grant prospecting pipeline and tracking systems to ensure accuracy and timely follow-ups.
  • Coordinates internal review processes for new proposals, incorporating feedback and aligning with UWM strategy.
  • Assists with the preparation of grant reports and compliance materials.
  • Builds familiarity on philanthropic trends and funder priorities related to UWM’s four impact areas.
  • Supports continuous improvement by participating in debriefs and applying lessons learned to future submissions.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong writing, editing, and research skills
  • Ability to synthesize information into clear, mission-aligned content
  • Curiosity and initiative in learning about funding opportunities
  • Strong organization and attention to detail with ability to manage multiple deadlines
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills
  • Familiarity with nonprofit or grant environments preferred but not required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel);
    Salesforce or grants systems familiarity a plus
