Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU/Stepdown) position requiring at least 2 years of experience, Epic proficiency, and the ability to titrate drips on a high-acuity night shift.
Responsibilities- Acute care stepdown/PCU unit within a hospital setting
- 28-bed unit serving adult patients with mixed medical/surgical, cardiac, and stroke diagnoses — many arriving through the ER
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4, with patient care techs available at a 1:14 ratio
- RNs are required to read and interpret telemetry monitoring; telemetry techs are present on the unit
- RNs are required to titrate drips, including heparin, octreotide, and insulin, as well as administer maintenance IV medications
- Specialty equipment includes code carts, LUCAS machines, Hoyer lifts, and Sit-and-Stand devices
- Charting system:
Epic - 12-hour night shifts (1830–0700); scheduling is done by unit schedulers on a 6-week cycle
- Every other weekend required
- Holiday rotation with permanent staff required
- Floating required to Med/Surg and other hospital areas, including ICU/ED, based on abilities
- This is a high-flow unit with frequent admissions, transfers, and discharges — team-oriented nurses with a positive attitude are strongly preferred
- A charge nurse is present on each shift and carries an assignment
- Unit support includes a unit secretary 2–3 days/week and a stocking clerk 3 days/week
- Orientation consists of one week of classroom training followed by two 12-hour shifts of unit-specific orientation
- A pass/fail open-book exam on unit skills is administered during orientation; a score of 90% or higher is required to pass — failure to pass will result to contract termination
- Scrub color:
Navy blue - Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to remove them will result in contract termination
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility — driver's license is used to verify permanent address
- Candidates who are currently or have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any Common Spirit-affiliated facility, including CHI and/or Dignity, within the past year are not eligible — candidates employed PRN through outside firms will be considered
- RTO must be submitted upfront; no more than 7 days per 13-week contract will be approved, and additional RTO will not be approved after submission
- Active NE state or Compact (NLC) RN license required — pending licenses not accepted
- Active certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS — pending certifications not accepted
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- PCU or stepdown experience required
- Epic EMR experience required
- Ability to read and interpret telemetry rhythms
- Driver's license required for consideration and used to verify residence outside the 50-mile radius
- 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
