A Brief OverviewPrescribes, delegates, and coordinates professional nursing care to pediatric patients through the use of the nursing process and in accordance with hospital policy/procedure and clinical practice guidelines. Meets job‑specific standards and demonstrates competency in identified skills for the area.
Essential Functions- Conducts holistic age‑specific patient/family assessments upon visit according to defined standards.
- Completes ongoing patient/family assessments/reassessments according to appropriate CPGs or protocols and unit standard of care.
- Collects and documents data related to patient’s physical, mental, developmental, emotional, and social condition.
- Demonstrates age‑specific competency in assessment by obtaining and interpreting information in terms of the patient’s needs, knowledge of growth and development, and understanding the range of treatment needed.
- Assesses family expectations for, and involvement in, the assessment and continuous care or treatment of the patient.
- Communicates plan of care to the patient/family so they can understand.
- Identifies/assesses the need for MD involvement or potential change in plan of care.
- Documents and evaluates nursing actions, ensuring chart audits meet JCAHO and organizational expectations (overall goal of 95%).
- Facilitates timely communication to/from patient/family and other healthcare disciplines; answers patient‑care related questions and requests, returning phone calls within the same business day received.
- Reviews patient charts as assigned to facilitate coordination of care by ensuring completion of tests, consultations, procedures, interdisciplinary follow‑up, and referrals as needed.
- Follows up on lab results within 48 hours after results obtained.
- Considers cultural, cognitive, emotional, and social influences on the patient/families’ ability and readiness to learn.
- Documents all teaching on the FER to include understanding of topics taught.
- Supports the MD in clinic to maintain workflow and meet expectations of customers by being on time.
- Demonstrates effective delegation techniques.
- Performs special tasks and procedures within the scope of practice for an RN that is unique to ambulatory care clinics.
- Completely organizes work and communicates effectively in written documentation or verbally to appropriate individuals.
- Coordinates patient care to ensure continuity of care.
- Maintains regular attendance.
- Performs physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section.
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited school of nursing (required).
- Associate’s Degree from an accredited school of nursing (required).
- Minimum 1 year of RN experience; incumbents with less than 1 year must commit to a full‑time Nurse Residency Program (required).
- Experience with pediatric patients (preferred).
- Previous experience with EPIC (preferred).
- RN — Registered Nurse — State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure valid in Nebraska (required upon hire).
- BLS — Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association (required upon hire).
