The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides professional nursing care for residents of all ages in long term care, under the supervision of a registered nurse, advanced practice provider, or physician. Demonstrates knowledge of nursing principles for the resident in the relevant clinical setting and practices within the full scope of nursing expertise/knowledge. Utilizes appropriate age and population specific standards related to the physical and psychosocial needs of the resident as per care plan.
Performs testing to evaluate data reflective of the resident's status and provides the care needed. Recognizes problems, recommends solutions and responds effectively to assist in emergent situations.
Ensures the health, comfort and safety of residents. Contributes to the assessment of residents and administers medications or treatments as ordered. Provides technical support to healthcare professionals as needed. Documents resident interactions and the outcomes related to resident care, medication, behavior, activity, and dietary. Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with resident, health care providers, and the public. Works effectively with professional and supportive personnel as a member of an interdisciplinary care team.
Communicates clearly and maintains confidentiality of sensitive information. Counsels residents, family members and/or resident advocate, under the direction of a registered nurse, advanced practice provider or physician on prevention and treatment plans. Applies resident education principles to develop a self‑care program. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Graduate from an accredited practical nursing program as a Licensed Practical Nurse. An associate degree in practical nursing is preferred.
If the position requires IV therapy/management skills, North Dakota applicants must have graduated from a Board‑approved AASPN program where IV therapy is part of the curriculum or completed an IV Therapy course approved by the North Dakota Board of Nursing.
Must have attended a pre‑licensure nursing program that included supervised clinical experience across the life span as part of the curriculum or have had a minimum of 400 hours of experience as an LPN at another facility. Specific services/positions may have additional education, training or experience requirements.
Currently holds an unencumbered Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license with the State Nursing Board and/or possess multi‑state licensure privileges. Obtains and subsequently maintains required department‑specific competencies and certifications. Completes required annual continuing education units (CEU) and competency training requirements of the department and facility.
