Description:
Registered Nurses are required to pass a skills exam during orientation. The exam is open book and resources will be provided to ensure success. A score of 90% or higher is required to pass, or termination will occur. Artificial nails are not permitted in patient care areas. Failure to comply with this policy may result in termination of the contract. The unit typically sees patients with oncology and trauma diagnoses.
Oncology experience is preferred but PCU experience is acceptable. RNs are sometimes required to titrate drips, including insulin and cardizem. Common titratable drips include chemotherapy, heparin, and cardizem. BLS and ACLS certifications are required for all RNs. Travelers may float to both Med Surg and PCU units as needed. Orientation will last for two days. The patient ratio is 1 RN to 4 patients in PCU and 1 RN to 5 patients in Med Surg during the day.
During the nights, the ratio is 1 RN to 5 to 6 patients. Weekend work is required every other weekend, and self-scheduling is available. Nursing Assistant support is provided on the unit. The ideal candidate will possess a genuine need to care for patients and demonstrate a positive attitude. Teamwork is essential to success in this environment. Cultural diversity and respect for different beliefs are valued in patient care.
Patients are supported through various stages, from diagnosis to support in end-of-life care. The hospital may cancel up to 4 shifts during a 13-week assignment. Charting is completed using the designated electronic medical record system.
