Job OverviewThis position is a unique opportunity to provide one-on-one care to patients in the specialty area of therapeutic apheresis. Nurses will work collaboratively with physicians and act as the liaison between the physician and the patient. The role includes traveling to different hospitals and Red Cross sites to perform apheresis procedures.
Standard
Schedule:
Variable 1st shift Monday to Friday – 40 hours per week with rotating on-call duties.
- Perform apheresis procedures autonomously in multiple settings, including critical care, emergency room, and freestanding outpatient centers.
- Perform venipunctures, access central venous catheters, and access vortex and Bard ports.
- Manage all phases of therapeutic apheresis procedures (plasma exchange, red cell exchange, platelet and white cell reduction, photopheresis, and hematopoietic progenitor cell collection) ensuring safe and appropriate patient care.
- Explain procedures to patients, families, and attending healthcare professionals as needed.
- Act as a consultant to external health care personnel about clinical apheresis.
- Assess patient status relative to therapeutic apheresis prior to and during procedures using the nursing process, laboratory results, and other clinical indicators.
- Coordinate closely with physicians and nurses at a variety of hospitals to arrange therapeutic apheresis treatments and facilitate coordinated care.
- Evaluate patient medication for compatibility and safety of the apheresis procedure and determine when to contact the physician.
- Assemble, restock, QC, and maintain supplies and equipment to ensure a clean, safe, and efficient work environment.
- Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse and CPR certification.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Two years of experience in medical/surgical or critical care nursing, or related experience.
- Previous apheresis or dialysis experience is beneficial but not required.
- Proficient in venipuncture and vein selection.
- Strong verbal communication skills for discussing procedures and medical issues with patients, families, and physicians.
- Customer service experience and public relations skills are preferred.
- Valid driver's license with a good driving record.

The American Red Cross will provide all necessary training. No prior experience in apheresis is required.
COVID-19 vaccination is required for all new hires, unless an exemption has been approved. Proof of vaccination must be submitted upon hiring.
Physical requirements include wearing protective clothing such as lab coats, gloves, face shields, etc. Ability to operate a wide variety of laboratory or medical equipment and to use a personal computer for sustained periods.
