The Step Down unit provides care to patients who need a level of care between intensive and progressive care units. Patients include traumas, surgeries, transplants, lung disorders, and ventilated patients. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3-4 on day and night shifts. Care is provided in collaboration with a critical care intensivist and nursing staff. Safety for all patients is the top priority.
Traveling nurses must be prepared to float frequently to meet hospital needs. Floating may occur within the scope of practice and can include various units. The unit has an interdisciplinary support team, including various specialized service teams. Travelers are required to work 4 weekend shifts out of 8 possible in a 4-week period. They must also work 2/3 major holidays, including significant dates during winter holidays.
