Position Summary
Extended Recovery RN responsible for providing high‑quality patient‑centered care to post‑operative orthopedic patients requiring extended recovery or overnight care. This role involves monitoring patient conditions, managing pain, preventing complications, encouraging early mobility, preparing patients for their discharge home, and ensuring a safe recovery process. The Extended Recovery nurse will work closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, hospitalists, nurse navigators, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes and maintain safety standards.

Schedule:
48 Hours per 6‑week scheduling period, 7:00 pm – 7:00 am
Education: Graduate of an accredited school/college of nursing required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
Licensure: Registered Nursing licensed in the State of Nebraska or eligible compact state required.
Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS) to be acquired within 90 days of hire or transfer date required.
Experience: 1+ Years of RN (Registered Nurse) Experience preferred.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities- Strong knowledge of post‑operative orthopedic care, including pain management and mobility assistance
- Proficiency in IV therapy, wound care, patient assessment, and vital sign monitoring
- Ability to recognize and respond to complications including respiratory distress and infection
- Excellent communication and patient education skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment
- Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) and documentation of patient assessments and interventions
- Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills
- Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments post‑surgery
- Monitor vital signs, pain levels, and overall patient condition
- Administer medications including pain management protocols
- Assist patients with mobility ensuring safety and adherence to post‑op restrictions
- Identify signs of post operative complications and intervene appropriately
- Provide wound care, monitor for infections, and manage post anesthesia side effects
- Initiates action to correct, prevent, and/or minimize risk(s) to the patient, family or hospital employees (i.e., falls, needle sticks, patient concerns).
- Maintain accurate and timely medical records
- Communicate effectively with patients and families, addressing concerns and providing education about recovery expectations.
- Maintains a professional behavior in attitudes, demeanor, interactions across departments to achieve the organizations mission of providing efficient, high-quality patient centered care
- Comply with safety activities, policies and procedures and regulatory requirements such as OSHA and The Joint Commission
- Adheres to HIPPA regulations and maintains patient confidentiality
- Follow established guidelines as stated in hospital and departmental policies and procedures
- Assist in onboarding and training new nursing staff
- Employee is responsible for all other duties as assigned for which competency has been demonstrated.
This position is classified as Medium Work in the Dictionary of Occupational Titles, requiring the exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
