Registered Nurse Stepdown
The role involves providing nursing care in a stepdown unit. Nurses will care for patients requiring intermediate care and downgraded from higher acuity units. Common diagnoses include cardiac and vascular-related issues. Nurse to patient ratios are typically 1:4, with 1:3 for post-surgical patients in the first 24 hours. Nurses are responsible for titrating various medications. There is a charge nurse available on each shift, who may not have an assignment.
Patient care techs are available with a ratio of 1:18. Clientist and intensivist services are available in-house 24/7. Respiratory therapy is also present in the unit continuously. Nurses must read and interpret telemetry strips; remote tele techs assist with monitoring. Shifts are scheduled by management with no self-scheduling options. Weekend work is required on an every-other-week basis. Floating to other units of the same or lower acuity may be required.
The required clothing color is navy blue. Additional time off requests must be limited and provided upfront. Management can cancel a limited number of shifts during the assignment.
