Assistant Director, Genomics Core

The Assistant Director of the Genomics Core Facility must have broad experience in genomic sequencing. The Assistant Director works closely with the Genomics Core Facility Scientific Director and with UNMC investigators, scientists, graduate students, industry representatives, and service technicians. Responsibilities include consultation, design, development and analysis of experiments; coordinating core staff; managing databases and the core website; participating in billing and budget operations;

presenting project development and core progress in campus‑wide seminars; assisting in external‑funding applications; representing the GCF at specialized courses and conferences; day‑to‑day management of the Core; leading long‑term projects; and creating new processes and procedures to address complex scientific problems.

• Assist researchers in all stages of projects, including initial consultation, design, development and analysis of experiments.
• Coordinate activities of core staff and manage core databases and website.
• Participate in billing and budget operations and present project development and core progress in campus‑wide seminars.
• Assist in applications for external funding and represent GCF at specialized courses and conferences.
• Oversee day‑to‑day management of the Core, lead long‑term projects, and develop new processes and procedures to solve complex scientific problems.

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology, Genomics or a related field (or equivalent post‑high‑school education in lieu of experience).
• Experience (5+ years): Experience with molecular biology, genomics and/or next‑generation sequencing, including sample and library preparation, protocol optimization, instrument usage and maintenance and sample quality control.
• Skills & Abilities: Strong organizational, interpersonal and writing skills; ability to work collaboratively; critical thinking and analytical skills; knowledge of genomic principles and standard lab practices; strong communication skills; ability to work independently and productively; proficiency in basic lab skills and procedures.

• Education: Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field.
• Experience: Molecular biology and/or next‑generation sequencing with working knowledge of genetic variant detection, transcriptomics, epigenomics on Illumina platforms, use of Nanostring technology and single‑cell ‘omics; proven ability to manage shared resources, implement goals, policies and procedures; supervision of staff or students and overall laboratory management.
• Additional Knowledge: Data analysis software applications.
