Job DescriptionWellmark is looking for a highly experienced health care professional with at least 10+ years of experience in the industry, including 5+ years working directly with employer benefit consultants. The ideal candidate will bring a strong blend of robust sales acumen, industry‑specific knowledge, and technical prowess, allowing them to understand market dynamics and capitalize on opportunities. The role requires the ability to translate health care and benefits knowledge into actionable influence, leverage industry networks, and position Wellmark as a top‑tier administrator.
Licensure in Iowa and South Dakota is required, and travel up to 60% of the time is expected.
The position will serve as the central hub for consultant engagement, working closely with Sales Directors, Sales Team Leaders, and SMEs across the business to align strategy and drive impact.
- Presence in the Des Moines, Iowa office as needed, pending candidate location and evolving business needs.
- Bachelor’s Degree or direct and applicable work experience.
- 10+ years of related professional experience, including 5 years working with employer benefit consultants.
- Current health and life insurance license in Iowa and South Dakota, or will be obtained within 60 days of starting.
- Strong knowledge of insurance products, funding arrangements, government regulations, health care cost drivers, cost‑management, competition’s offerings, and market dynamics.
- Skills in developing and implementing strategic plans to enhance sales performance and translate corporate strategy into actionable results.
- Proven sales experience with a track record of success, including strategic selling in health insurance or related field, building and selling customizable solutions, and coaching sales competencies.
- Formal or informal leadership experience with strong leadership competencies.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and strong presentation skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially PowerPoint.
- Ability to establish matrixed partnerships and follow through.
- Strong problem‑solving and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced dynamic environment.
- Valid driver’s license and overnight travel; travel required between 50–60%.
- Extensive experience with self‑funded health insurance.
- Existing relationships with national, regional, and local health insurance consultants and consulting firms.
- Continued education within the healthcare field.
- Strong knowledge of pharmacy benefits.
- Develop a broad network of contacts across local, regional, and national consulting houses and maintain strong relationships.
- Collaborate with internal teams—sales, operations, competitive intel, underwriting, product, claims, and customer service—to align Wellmark products and services with client goals.
- Create and manage processes to routinely distribute important information to consultants, including legislative updates, new market solutions, and training schedules.
- Direct involvement in BCBS Association and Consortium work groups to stay connected to strategic initiatives.
- Serve as internal conduit with the Consortium to provide maximum value to our membership.
- Proactively manage consultant relationships to understand their value proposition and align business plans.
- Coordinate and attend broker, consultant, and industry events; lead creation of materials to educate consultants.
- Work with Sales, Product, and Operational teams to develop products and services that differentiate us in the marketplace and enhance the consultant experience.
- Apply subject matter expertise to grow and expand broker and consultant relationships, generating referrals and leads.
- Other duties as assigned.
