Position Summary

Under supervision, the Maintenance Mechanic Trainee performs maintenance and repair of existing machinery and equipment, installation of new and replacement machinery and equipment throughout the District. Initially, most of the work will be done under the direction of a more experienced Maintenance Mechanic, but as the Trainee becomes more experienced, some tasks may be performed without direct supervision. The Maintenance Mechanic Trainee must successfully complete all required training and show proficiency in essential functions prior to the end of a forty‑eight (48) month training period to become eligible for consideration for advancement to the position of Maintenance Mechanic I.

Education
  • Required: High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Preferred: Associate's Degree in Precision Machine Technology, Energy Generation Operation, Automotive Technology, or Diesel Technology.
Minimum Requirements
  • Required: Minimum of 2 years experience working as an industrial, heavy equipment, or automotive mechanic in the last seven (7) years.
Licenses, Certifications and/or Testing
  • Required: Have and maintain a valid driver’s license Upon Hire and
  • Required: Forklift Certification within 1 Year and
  • Required: Pre‑employment Background Check & Drug Screen Upon Hire and
  • Required: Pre‑employment and/ or post‑offer physical demands screening Upon Hire and

  • Have or obtain formal training to qualify for the position of Maintenance Mechanic I within forty‑eight (48) months of assignment to this position. Training shall include the following Metropolitan Community College courses or equivalent from any other accredited institution.

  • A good record of safety when performing the tasks required of previous positions and when performing other job‑related functions including driving a District vehicle.
  • Efficient written and verbal communication skills, in English, to assist internal and external customers, co‑workers and management professionally, regardless of provocation. (Intermediate proficiency)
  • Proficiency with personal computers, tablets, and/or other electronic devices to include familiarity with, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word) and enterprise wide software (e.g., SAP). (Entry proficiency)

Essential Functions
  • Assist with and perform the overhaul, repair, and preventive maintenance of pumps, gearboxes, compressors, valves, valve operators and other equipment at various District facilities.
  • Assist with Maintenance Mechanic I, Maintenance Mechanic II, and Sr. Maintenance Mechanic job functions including performing duties related to the blacksmith shop and machine shop. Functions may be performed independently for training purposes.
  • Prioritize the health and well‑being of the District workforce by promoting a safety‑first mindset.
  • Assist with and perform the installation of new equipment throughout the District.
  • Assist with and perform piping and plumbing work.
  • Perform equipment painting and coating, including surface preparation, as needed.
  • Operate a variety of District equipment and vehicles including man lifts, overhead cranes, truck mounted cranes, and forklifts.
  • Assist Carpenter/Tradesman as needed throughout the District.
  • Assist Stationary Engine Mechanic as needed throughout the District.
