Nature of Work: Highly skilled maintenance and specialized repair work on a variety of complex types of automotive, medium, heavy truck, forestry, golf turf, construction, fire apparatus and related fleet equipment. The role may include acting as a lead worker and providing training to subordinates. Work is performed under the direction and general supervision of a foreman.
Education & Experience- High school diploma or its equivalent.
- Option 1:
Two (2) years of vocational or trade school in an automotive or diesel mechanical program AND four (4) years of experience as an automotive and/or heavy equipment mechanic at a dealer or large fleet work environment. - Option 2:
Six (6) years of experience working as a skilled mechanic in a dealer or large fleet work environment, including experience with gasoline, diesel, and electrically powered equipment. - Option 3:
An equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.
- Current Master-level ASE Certification in the Automobile & Light Truck Certification (A Series) or Medium-Heavy Truck Certification (T Series) or EVT Master Level III in Fire Apparatus or Ambulance Technician.
- Valid class "A" commercial driver's license with "N" endorsement, and air brake certification.
- Forklift operator's permit obtained by the end of the probationary period.
- Second Grade Hoisting and Engineer's Certificate obtained by the end of the probationary period.
- Motor vehicle A/C license valid under section 609 of the Clean Air Act obtained by the end of the probationary period.
- Possession of tools specified by the City, which will be inspected and approved by a shop supervisor.
- Willingness to purchase additional hand tools as needed.
- Perform and coordinate master-level diagnosis, maintenance and repair of automotive, medium/heavy truck, forestry, golf turf, construction, and fire apparatus vehicles.
- Conduct scheduled and preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs of equipment.
- Execute routine welding as part of heavy equipment mechanical work.
- Repair and maintain specialized heavy equipment and diesel fire equipment including pumps, valves, hydraulic systems, and steering mechanisms.
- Maintain and troubleshoot assemblies and accessories such as transmissions, axles, and hydraulic units.
- Review repair and maintenance needs, create and update work orders, and estimate labor and repair costs.
- Assist with field maintenance and repairs, including towing operations when required.
- Diagnose complex vehicle problems and provide specialized repairs independently or with subordinate technicians.
- Prepare reports and records using a computerized fleet management system, and manage parts and equipment inventory.
- Lead workers by providing direction, training, and technical guidance.
- Maintain organization, safety, and cleanliness of the work area.
- Adhere to attendance schedules as established by the supervisor.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned or required within the classification scope.
- Operating computers and technology with standard or customized software applications.
- Knowledge of modern methods in automotive, medium/heavy truck, construction, forestry, golf turf, and fire apparatus trade.
- Understanding of gasoline and diesel engine operating principles and mechanics.
- Knowledge of design, construction, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of conventional and specialized vehicles.
- Knowledge of automotive tools, gauges, machinery, and shop equipment including gas and electric welding equipment.
- Knowledge of hydraulic equipment systems and electronic controls.
- Knowledge of fire ladders, engines, pumps, and transfer cases.
- Understanding of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.
- Skill in operating and maintaining light, medium/heavy truck, construction, forestry, golf turf, and fire apparatus equipment.
- Skill in using master-level tools and machine equipment.
- Skill in locating, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical defects.
