Position Overview

The Asphalt Equipment Operator is responsible for the control and operation of multiple types of asphalt paving equipment and laborer duties.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensuring a safe work environment by adhering to safety protocols, instructions, and regulations.
  • Operating various types of asphalt paving equipment including asphalt paver, screed, rollers, mill, broom, and skid steer.
  • Loading, unloading, and distributing asphalt and other materials using appropriate equipment.
  • Setting up and tearing down equipment.
  • Performing minor servicing and maintenance of equipment; referring major problems to the supervisor.
  • Performing general labor duties when necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience and/or training in a related position; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Work Requirements
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must pass a pre‑employment physical, drug screen, and criminal background check.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Regular and consistent attendance is required and must be willing to work evenings and weekends when necessary.
  • Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations.
  • Willingness to work independently within a team environment and assist the team with other duties as required.
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
  • Knowledge of operating heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in construction.
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations and construction sites.
  • Knowledge of trenching and shoring standards.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently under a variety of working conditions.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations to keep time and material records.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate heavy and complex equipment requiring skill and the exercise of independent judgment.
Physical Requirements
  • Able to communicate with others by email, telephone, and in person.
  • Able to utilize a computer for word processing, email communication, and preparation of documents and presentations.
  • Able to regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to frequently talk, hear, walk, reach, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, sit as well as occasionally stand, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Able to climb ladders, inclined walkways, access elevated platforms, and work at heights as well as in tight quarters.
  • May require sitting for extended periods of time.
Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions; and extreme cold and/or heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
