A.M. Cohron & Son is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to support bridge and heavy highway construction projects across the Midwest. This role operates excavators, cranes, loaders, and other heavy equipment to move materials, support bridge foundations, and assist structure erection. Responsibilities include safe operation, daily equipment inspections, basic maintenance, and following all safety procedures. Operators work closely with field crews, signal persons, and supervisors to complete quality work on schedule while upholding our strong safety culture and pride in building vital transportation infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Safely operate excavators, cranes, loaders, and other heavy equipment on bridge projects
- Support bridge foundations, pile driving, and structure erection activities
- Perform daily equipment inspections, lubrication, and basic preventive maintenance
- Follow all OSHA, company, and site-specific safety procedures and protocols
- Work with foremen, signal persons, and crew members to complete tasks efficiently
- Read and follow directions from plans, stakes, and supervisors in the field
- Assist with material handling, grading, and site preparation as needed
- Maintain clean, organized equipment and work areas
- Travel to project sites across Iowa and surrounding states
- Report equipment issues promptly and assist mechanics as directed
Required Skills
- Heavy equipment operation (excavators, loaders, dozers, cranes/rigging support)
- Knowledge of bridge and heavy highway construction practices
- Equipment inspection and basic preventive maintenance
- Understanding of OSHA and construction site safety standards
- Grade reading and working to stakes/lines
- Signal and hand communication with ground crews and operators
- Basic mechanical aptitude
- Ability to read and follow instructions and field layouts
- Working safely around traffic, utilities, and open excavations
- Travel readiness for regional project assignments
