Job Summary

Our Roadway Worker in Charge position will perform on‑site roadway worker protection for activities on and around live railroad tracks and is responsible for job‑site coordination, dispatcher/train communication, and various types of on‑track safety in controlled and non‑controlled track areas.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide the required job‑site protection on each assignment, error‑free and consistent with the rules; including radio communication with train dispatchers and engineers, ensuring work groups are clear of limits during train movements, and granting permission for trains and on‑track equipment to proceed through limits.
  • Perform daily job briefings with all personnel on the job site and ensure all personnel adhere to the safety requirements of the railroad.
  • Prepare and submit required electronic forms, including a job‑setup form for each flagging assignment, daily work reports, invoices, and other required reports.
  • Handle and place signs, derail, and other tools and equipment weighing 15 to 90 pounds, which may be necessary multiple times throughout the day.
  • Actively participate in routine reoccurring safety classes and qualification training.
  • Maintain a high level of communication with the RWIC supervisors and managers regarding assignments and schedules.
  • Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and respectful workplace culture, free from behaviors that undermine morale, productivity, or organizational values.
  • Uphold the organization’s standards of integrity, accountability, and respect in all duties and interactions.
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required to meet business needs.
Travel Requirements

This position requires routine and extensive travel across Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Periodic travel along the Northeastern coast may also be required. Candidates must be willing and able to travel frequently, including overnight stays, in alignment with project schedules and business needs.

Qualifications
  • Certified in On‑Track Worker and Operating Rules.
  • Capable of completing required physical demands and tasks.
  • Knowledge of warning roadway workers of approaching trains.
  • Understanding of the on‑track safety training and qualifications required of roadway workers to be protected.
  • Proficiency in the radio procedure for communicating between RWIC/EICs and assigned work groups.
  • Proficiency in performing a job briefing with all roadway workers within their work location.
  • Ability to place railroad advance warning and stop signs.
  • Ability to install a railroad derail and apply locking device.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Proficiency with electronic communications including email and text as well as standard office applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
