Job Title: Bus Driver (Part-Time)
Location: Student Transportation Center, Omaha, Nebraska
Reports To: Director, Student Transportation
Work Schedule/FLSA Status: 185 Duty Day as per negotiated agreement, Non-Exempt
Salary: $24.65 Per Hour
Position Type: Part‑time. Requires a split shift with both morning and afternoon shifts each day.
Training Class: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Applicants must meet attendance and punctuality requirements during paid training.
Position PurposeOperate school vehicles safely under all weather conditions and transport students and authorized persons on scheduled routes, field trips, co‑curricular trips, and special trips as authorized by OPS officials. Assist special‑needs students, including transporting wheelchair‑bound students. Conduct bus practice runs and emergency evacuations. Service, inspect, and clean vehicles and related equipment. Perform daily pre‑trip inspections, complete required forms, records and reports.
Must be willing to drive in the morning and afternoon on a split schedule.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- High school diploma or G.E.D.
- Valid driver’s license with a minimum of three (3) years of driving experience and a safe driving record.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
- Successful completion of a pre‑employment drug test.
- Successful completion of the Student Transportation Bus Driver Training Program, including an NE DMV Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), NE DMV School Bus Driver’s permit, registration with the Federal Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, and First Aid/CPR training.
- Must meet OPS insurability requirements.
- Demonstrated understanding and willingness to comply with the practices and procedures outlined in the Handbook for Transportation Employees.
- Drive school vehicle safely and professionally.
- Operate on scheduled and designated routes.
- Comply with all traffic rules, regulations, and ordinances.
- Demonstrate proficiency in vehicle handling and maneuvering.
- Serve, inspect, and clean vehicle and related equipment.
- Maintain control of student passengers within required safety parameters consistent with district policy.
- Work effectively in a distracting environment.
- Serve as a positive role model for youth.
- Continuously acquire professional knowledge by attending seminars, workshops, professional meetings, or conducting research.
- Work with and understand a diverse student population.
- Complete daily pre‑trip inspections; fill out forms, records, and reports per federal, state, and district policy.
Perform other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor and central office administrators as directed by the Superintendent.
EquipmentMay require use of levers, lifts, mechanical tools, and cleaning supplies.
TravelLocal travel is required.
Physical and Mental Demands- Respond rapidly in emergency situations.
- Organize, manage time, communicate, and interact effectively.
- Work in office, school, and warehouse environments.
- Lift, move, and reposition objects and materials, frequently exerting force equal to lifting 50 pounds.
Stand, walk, sit, lift, carry, push, pull, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and use hands as required for bus operation, maintenance, and student assistance. Functional performance expectations are described in detail in the job standard and are consistent with the requirements of this position.
