Position: Bus Driver (Part-Time) - 2026-2027 School Year

Hiring For The  School Year

Job Title: Bus Driver (Part-Time)

Location: Student Transportation Center

Reports To: Director, Student Transportation

Work Schedule/FLSA Status: 185 Duty Days per negotiated agreement / Non‑Exempt

Salary

Schedule:

Part‑time position; split shift required; both morning and afternoon shifts daily.

Training Class: Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; attendance and punctuality required.

Position Purpose

Operate school vehicles safely across all weather conditions, transport students and authorized persons along school routes, field trips, and special trips. Assist special needs students, conduct bus practice and emergency evacuations, maintain vehicle cleanliness, perform daily pre‑trip inspections and complete required forms.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Minimum 21 years of age.
  • High‑school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Valid driver’s license and at least three (3) years driving experience; safe driving record.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Successful completion of a pre‑employment drug test.
  • Completion of the Student Transportation Bus Driver Training Program: NE DMV Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), NE DMV School Bus Driver’s permit, Federal Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse registration, First Aid/CPR training.
  • Must meet OPS insurability requirements.
  • Understanding and willingness to comply with the Handbook for Transportation Employees procedures.
Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Drive school vehicle safely and professionally.
  • Operate on scheduled/designated routes and comply with all traffic rules.
  • Service, inspect, and clean vehicle and related equipment.
  • Maintain control of student passengers and ensure safety per district policy.
  • Work effectively amid distractions.
  • Serve as a positive role model for youth.
  • Pursue continuing professional development through seminars, workshops, or research.
  • Interact appropriately with a diverse student population.
  • Complete daily pre‑trip inspections and report forms as required.
Additional Duties

Perform other related tasks as assigned by supervisor or central office administrators.

Equipment and Travel

May require use of levers, lifts, mechanical tools, and cleaning supplies. Local travel required.

  • Rapid response in emergency situations.
  • Strong organization, time‑management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Work in office, school buildings, and warehouse settings.
  • Lift, move, and reposition objects frequently up to 50 pounds.

- Rarely 1‑5% of an 8‑hour day

- Occasionally 6‑33% of an 8‑hour day

- Frequently 34‑66% of an 8‑hour day

- Continuously 67‑100% of an 8‑hour day

Essential Functions – Physical Activity

Standing, walking, sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and hand usage are required. Typical lifting is up to 50 pounds. Tasks involve operating bus controls, cleaning, and assisting students.

Employee Interaction
  • Contact with district personnel, customers, and vendors.
  • Work under direct supervision of department supervisor.
  • Handle diverse student population with tact and diplomacy.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and professional demeanor with all customers and colleagues.
