Mentor Program at EmpowerU at Hartwick College

Mentors are matched with EmpowerU students for both in-class support (self-advocacy, support with class work, communication) and navigating student life on campus (engagement, organization, time management, exploring campus resources, dining on campus, accessing technology, attending events and clubs, etc.)

EmpowerU at Hartwick College offers a two-or four-year transformative program designed for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities who want to experience all that college life has to offer. Students gain a real college experience by participating in social events, attending lectures and exploring the world of higher education, all while making lasting connections. Hartwick students from all majors and disciplines have the opportunity to work with EmpowerU students as mentors, partnering for social events, academics, and other campus activities.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implements Staff Actions Plans for Community Habilitation services, including safeguard information, providing guidance and encouragement at all times.
  • Demonstrates positive examples in dress, communication, social behaviors, and healthy decision making.
  • Learns to communicate effectively with the student, develops rapport, and relationship of trust.
  • Respects each student's choices and needs.
  • Maintains positive relationships with the student, their natural supports, and other staff.
  • Immediately reports incidents of abuse, neglect or other reportable issues.
  • Attends all Springbrook required trainings.
  • Documents service delivery contemporaneously using agency software only.
  • Adheres to schedule determined by the student, is prompt, reports major schedule changes via Sling.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge Requirements:

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
  • Professional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in the use of computer software.
  • Meet the requirements to drive Springbrook vehicles as required.
