CalPERS seeks an Accounting Officer (AO), Specialist in the Financial Reporting and Accounting Services Division, Investment Analysis & Reporting. Under the general supervision of the Financial Accountant II (Supervisor), the incumbent performs professional accounting tasks, requiring knowledge of general and investment accounting principles and practices. The Accounting Officer (Specialist) analyzes, researches, and reconciles accounting activity for the Private Equity and Private Debt Programs.

The AO performs professional accounting tasks for the Private Equity and Private Debt Programs. Performs monthly cash reconciliations between partnerships’ contribution and distribution notices, the custodian bank, ABOR, and CalPERS’ People Soft system to ensure all activities are captured and recorded. The AO performs quarterly reconciliations between Partnership’s financial statements, including Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Statement of Cash Flow, Notes and Disclosures, and other relevant documents.

The AO prepares reports on Private Equity and Private Debt investment activities to the Board of Administration and in the CalPERS Annual Comprehensive Financial Report. The AO establishes, maintains, and updates policies and written desk procedures and identifies opportunities and makes recommendations to streamline and improve accounting processes. The AO serves as back‑up to team members within the Investment Analysis & Reporting Unit as needed and also participates on special projects.

Telework Information: This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, with up to two days of remote work and three days or more onsite, per week.

Effective July 1, 2025, The California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025). PLP 2025 directs that each employee shall receive a 3 percent reduction in pay in exchange for 5 hours PLP 2025 leave credits, monthly. The salary range(s) included in the job advertisement do not reflect the 3 percent reduction in pay.

Working Conditions
  • This position is designated as office-centered and works primarily onsite at the Sacramento, CA - Headquarters at least three weekdays.
  • May be required to sit for extended periods of time.
  • May be required to travel between buildings.
  • Must be able to work Monday – Friday from 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Minimum Requirements

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with general ledger records, journal entries, and reconciliations.
  • Experience in independently researching and analyzing accounting transactions.
  • Excellent Excel and Microsoft Suite experience.
