The Senior Accountant (Supervisor) is a key member of the Finance & Administration team, reporting to the Accounting Director. This role is responsible for supervising day-to-day accounting operations, leading the month‑end close process, maintaining the internal control and reconciliation environment as well as supporting the Accounting Director and CFO in financial reporting and strategic initiatives. The Senior Accountant will supervise two Staff Accountants and will also directly oversee the Accounts Payable Specialist and Accounting Clerk.
RESPONSIBILITIESSupervision & Team Leadership
- Supervise the Staff Accountant I and II, providing training, mentorship, and performance feedback.
- Oversee and delegate tasks to the Accounts Payable Specialist and Accounting Clerk.
- Foster a collaborative, service‑mindful team culture in alignment with DRM’s mission and Remote Work Telecommuting (RWT) policy (minimum 80% in‑office presence for new staff).
- Support onboarding, cross‑training, and development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for accounting processes.
- Embrace the role of mission through service hours at the client service locations.
Accounting Operations
- Manage daily accounting functions, including recognition of revenue for donations, grants and contracts, AP and credit card processing, journal entries, GIK inventory, reconciliations, and variance analysis.
- Timely review of a substantial amount of work papers prepared by staff accountants, clerks, and specialists, ensuring all work papers are accurate and properly tied to the trial balance at month‑end.
- Act as the primary reviewer for most accounting reconciliations and invoicing.
- Lead and ensure timely completion of the month‑end close process (target: 10 workdays), including trial balance sign‑off and timely and complete variance analysis.
- Oversee accounting for new LLC entities, including bank reconciliations, AP flows, and shared service agreements.
- Maintain accuracy of the general ledger and ensure compliance with GAAP and non‑profit accounting standards.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Initial preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports for management, board, and funders.
- Support contract billing, grant reporting, and participant‑level cost analysis.
- Provide in‑depth variance explanations and support monthly meetings with senior management to review financial results.
Internal Controls & Process Improvement
- Assist in automating manual processes (e.g., contract billing, inventory tracking) and enhance utilization of financial systems (Adaptive, Office Connect, ERP).
- Document and improve accounting policies and SOPs.
- Support audit preparation, compliance, and implementation of best practices, including meeting Single Audit requirements and enhancing the control environment accordingly.
- Ensure proper segregation of duties and support donor processing controls.
Technology & Systems
- Support and fully utilize accounting software (Great Plains, Net Suite, Adaptive, Beanworks, Paylocity).
- Assist with ERP transition planning (Great Plains sun setting, Net Suite implementation preferred).
- Review user access rights and support alignment of financial systems with strategic initiatives.
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required).
- 5+ years progressive accounting experience, including supervisory responsibilities; non‑profit experience preferred.
