The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center has an immediate opening for a full-time, exempt Accounting Manager, reporting to the Controller. The Accounting Manager plays a key leadership role in supporting the integrity, accuracy, and efficiency of the Center’s financial operations. This position is responsible for managing the month-end close process, maintaining the general ledger, overseeing daily accounting activities, and ensuring compliance with internal controls and GAAP standards.
This role also provides supervision and development for accounting staff and contributes to audit readiness and financial reporting in support of the Center’s mission. The position is hybrid (on-site at least 3 days each week), allowing for both in office and remote work.
- Own and manage the full month-end closing process
- Create, review, and approve journal entries
- Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and chart of accounts
- Review and approve account reconciliations and supporting analyses
- Manage daily accounting functions to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting
- Ensure adherence to internal controls and accounting policies
- Assist with internal control audits, financial statement audits, and Single Audit processes, including preparation of multiple schedules
- Support continuous improvement of accounting procedures and documentation
- Assist in preparing financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Complete endowment analysis, gift annuity reporting, and pledge reporting
- Coordinate internal cost allocations and external billings
Supervise and mentor accounting staff, including the Staff Accountant and Accounting Assistant - Provide guidance on workload prioritization, technical accounting matters, and professional development
- Foster a collaborative and accountable team environment
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across departments
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to anticipate needs before they arise
- Nonprofit accounting concepts (including endowments, pledges, and restricted funds) (preferred)
- Basic supervisory and people management principles

- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or advanced degree preferred, but not required
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressive accounting experience
- Strong knowledge of GAAP
- Experience with financial audits and internal controls
- Demonstrated ability to manage deadlines and multiple priorities
