You will assist with journal voucher and general ledger maintenance, monthly closing, grant funded project tracking, reporting, and annual audits and 990 preparation.
You will be a strong candidate if you have experience in nonprofit accounting, have acute attention to detail, are adroit with numbers, and can juggle multiple duties successfully. This is a full-time position, based in our Washington, DC office. We encourage individuals with lived experience of displacement or forced migration to apply.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Collaborate with the Director of Finance and Accounting to ensure the integrity of accounting system data in the following areas:
Accounts Payable/Receivable
- Process a high volume of vendor invoices including verifying W9/1099 and OFAC documents.
- Enter expenses into the accounting system accurately and in a timely manner.
- Record donations and revenue according to donor intent.
- Deposit checks promptly and accurately.
- Reconcile the accounting system revenue records with Development Department records on a monthly basis.
- Record stock donations and their subsequent sale in the accounting system.
- Prepare monthly bank and Investment accounts reconciliations.
- Assure employees reconcile their company credit card statements according to policy and procedures, and recorded transactions. accurately in Sage Intacct.
- Manage employee travel advances both before and after travel and record into Sage Intacct.
- Prepare journal entries according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Prepare journal voucher/general ledger for reconciliation.
- Record payroll journal entries and reconcile them with payroll and quarterly payroll tax filings (Form 941).
- Assist with departmental and organization-wide budgeting processes.
- Assist with developing project budgets.
- Prepare accurate budget versus actual reporting.
- Track budget versus actuals for departments and projects
- Prepare twice a month payroll for submission.
- Maintain multiple state payroll requirements.
- Maintain and promote effective financial controls, procedures, and systems to prevent fraud, support audit requests, and avoid risk.
- Recommend policy and procedural improvements to the Director of Finance and Accounting.
- Assist with the month-end close process.
- Support annual audit preparation and requirements.
- Prepare documentation required for completion of Form 990.
- Support the preparation of the 1099 and filing.
- Other duties as required.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting and/or Finance.
- Knowledge of Sage Intacct accounting software; (or similar expense payment software).
- Knowledge of GAAP and FASB requirements.
- Proficient with Excel and Google Sheets.
- At least 3 years of work experience as an Accountant; ideally in non profit accounting.
- A very high level of organization, attention to detail, and follow-through on responsibilities.
- Discretion and good professional judgment.
- Proclivity for problem solving and ability to take initiative.
- Willingness to regularly work in-person in Washington, DC with occasional hybrid remote work.

- $65,000 - $70,000 per year
